Pits are generally not very big dog.  People talk about their 100+ pound pits...those most likely are not true pit bulls, but rather mixes or a breed that looks like a pit.  Pit bulls are medium-sized dogs (without looking it up, I'd say around 18 inches or so and anywhere from 30-60 pounds).

don't listen to iggy, yes pitbulls were once small but as all working breeds are they vary greatly.many 100 lb. plus pitbulls bloodlines are pure and now being used as hunters, pullers, and protective work thanks to the larger size.this person iggy just likes to put his two cents in to feel important, but he's not to smart.

According to most conformation standards a male pit bull is supposed to be between 18 and 22 inches at the withers.  Weight doesn't matter as long as the proportions are right.  And I do know alot of people with 100+ pound purebred pits.  I'm not saying it is a good thing as one should never breed JUST for size.  Arguably one shouldn't breed for size at all, but nevertheless just because a pitbull is large doesn't mean it isn't purebred.  Mabey they aren't the best exemplars of the breed but most 100+ pound pits are papered and most generally the papers are accurate.  It is the epitome of stupidity to say that papers mean nothing if the dog is too big.

Pit bulls are NOT working dogs.  They are terriers.  I've seen pictures of those huge pits--they look ridiculous.  A 100 pound pit bull would be useless in a fighting ring:  they couldn't manuever fast enough.  I do not support dog fighting, but those huge pits are terrible examples of the breed.  It's just people wanting a dog who looks like it's on steriods.  It is not proper.

And porter, I'm not a "he."  I'm a she.

OK time for me to put opinion on the board, It is true that some larger pits may be mixed but by selectively breeding the larger examples  one can produce large purebred pits without sacrificing proportion, gameness, or even the ability for the dog to maneuver. I own a female that weights 98lbs right now and she can do anything you put in front her including track and hold a hog, clime a tree, ward off intruders human and animal, and even keep up step for step when we take the four wheelers out.  My point is that even at 100 plus lbs if the dog is bred right it is not a terrible example of the breed.  I personally don't like those tiny pits that are 15 or 16 inches tall and weight 25-30 lbs but that does not mean that they are not good examples that just means there not my type of dog.  If I had a choice I would take  a well proportioned medium sized pit any day over a large or a small pit. Not that there is anything wrong with the other two.

It's not the size of the dog but the size of the fight in the dog.  I have seen dogs of many different sizes and shapes and breeds that were kick ass dogs.  Some of the best dogs I have seen have been mutts.  I like the many types of pit bulls even the ones that have no papers.  I have seen back yard pits that could beat a papered pit in any arena

Technically, the name, pit bull, does not refer to a specific breed. It is a generic designation for several breeds including the American pit bull terrier, which was the first breed registered by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1898; its counterpart, the American Staffordshire terrier, which was registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1936; and the ancestor of both breeds, the Staffordshire bull terrier.

Pit Bulls can range anywhere from around 25 pounds (the fighting bred or gamebred dogs tend to be smaller, under 60 pounds) to over 100 pounds (show/pet) so there.

does anyone know how to mix pitbulls to get the best results, bigger height over 27 seven iches, over 80 pounds, with a large wide mouth like that of a bull terrier.  Does anyone know what i would produce by mixing a 27 inch, 83pound pit with a medium size pit mouth with short front legs.  some pit's legs are larger than the back which i want to find out and would such a mix result in bigger front legs so that it would be about 4 inches taller.  What about with a neo pit or a mastiff what would the results be.  I have looked everywhere on the internet but got no results.  This should be the millionare dollar question.  By this my pitbulls jaw and mouth would be stronger, heavier-its not that i want to mix but i just have a curiosity.  Please i just want to know.

There is a various amout of pitbull mixtures.  over time the pitbull has been mixed over and over again with various bull dog breeds, bull terriers, american bull dogs.  As long as it is mixed only with other bull dog breeds it is considered an american pitbull terrier.  Know about size this is what i got from a web site which i think is made out of pure lies.  It says it does matter in some fights like agaisnt the japanese tosa because tosa which weighs over 120-140 pounds if the pit weighs around 30 pounds can crush it when falling and since it has hanging skin the pitbull won't be able to grip its neck.  Its mouth would slide back off; however, I say that the tosa is just a weak dog the japanese is trying to advertise.  There are other dogs that could kill a tosa you don't know about but not a pit. A 60 pound pitbull could surely beat a tosa and 80 and adove would kill it especially if it has a big mouth. If you really want to know there is said to be a stronger pitbull in development call the neo-pit.  On the contary, there are website kennels that pits with the same appereance of neo pits and size.  This neo-pit breed probably is just a another recreation of what american pitbulls are today.  Pitbulls will always be the strongest fighting machine that is why they are always on the news and that is why they are the only breed trying to be band from the U.S and other countries.  In some counties they have already been banned.

yes actually Iggy a 100+ pit bull would be good in a fighting ring because if he was to fight then he would hit the other dog with his or her chest and use its weight to win.

Iggy, you are the type of person that gives the pit bull breed a bad name. I think that you should look into pit bull history before you say that their not working dog's. The American pit bull terrier has been a working dog since the 15th century.Butchers used them as a sort of herding dog, while they were bringing steer in town to get butchered, the pit bull would grab the steers that were straying from the herd by it's nose and PULL it back into place. That is just one of the many jobs preformed by the APBT.

First of all a female pit should not weight 90 pounds thats ridicolous.Im tired of people breeding pits with american bulldogs and bullmastiffs trying to make their pits huge.No wonder they are not recognized by the akc.I have a female pitbull at 17 inches tall and she weights 46 pounds and let me tell you she is very muscular.A male pitbull should weight anywhere from 55 to 69 pounds. From 17 to 20 inches tall. All colors are permissable.

MOGLI P.PITBULLS WERE BROUGHT TO US FROM ENGLAND,AND THEY WERE BRED FOR FIGHTING,WHEN BULLBAITING WAS OUTLAWED.THEY USED BULLDOGS FOR BULLBAITING,SO THEY TRIED USEING THEM FOR FIGHTING SINCE THEIR USE WAS SOLELY TO ATTACK.BUT THE BULLDOG WAS SO BIG AND MASSIVE THAT IT WOULD TIRE EASILY.SO THEY BRED A TERRIER ,WICH IS NOW EXTINCTED,TO HAVE SMALLER COMPACT DOGS WITH THE SAME TANASITY AND GRIP AS THE BULLDOG.IN STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND,THEY STARTED BREEDING AND CHOOSING THE SMALLER COMPACT PUPS AND LATER BRED THEM AND SO ON AND SO ON.WHEN BROUGHT TO AMERICA THE SAME THING HAPPENED HERE.AMERICANS ALWAYS LIKE BIGGER SO THEY BRED THE BIGGER PUPS TO BIGGER PUPS.SO THEY STARTED GETTING BIGER AND BIGGER.THEY EVEN SPLIT THE BREED TO THREE NAMES.AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER,AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE PIT BULL TERRIER AND THE MORE COMPACT  STAFFORDSHIRE PITBULL TERRIER.IN ALL DIFRENT BREEDS,BUT BECAUSE OF THE BREEDINGS OF BIGGER BREEDINGS OR SMALLER ONES. BUT IN ALL THEY ARE PITBULLS THAT DECENT FROM THE BREEDIN OF THE OLDTERRIER AND BULLDOG FROM THE OLD MOTHER LAND....THANK U I HOPE I WAS INFORMATIVE IF U HAVE SOMETHING TO ADD FEEL FREEE......SALVATORE.

And yes i have papers on him and i also know his mom, dad, brothers, cousins, uncles, and even his grandma and all of them have papers and are 100% pitbul. And it doesnt matter if he's not quik enough in the ring because them type of dogs you dont fight retard.

Pit's in general are medium sized dogs, but like human beings... they can either grow smaller or bigger than the average human. I have a 4 month pit pup, by his paws and his fathers size.. he's going to be around a 100 pounder. And he's a full blooded bluenose. Pits do a lot more than just guard/used for fighting these days Iggy.

YES IT IS TRUE THAT PITS TRADITIONALLY SHOULD NOT BE 100LBS AND I OWN PITS MY THEORY IS THAT OVER THE YEARS BREEDERS HAVE EITHER KEPT OR SOLD CERTAIN DOGS I KNOW BREEDERS THAT ONLY KEEP THE RUNT MAYBE FOR ILLEGAL PURPOSES I DON'T KNOW BECAUSE THE RUNT AT ITS ADULT SIZE IS USUALLY BETWEEN 30-55LBS AND THESE ARE CONSIDERED PIT READY BECAUSE JUST LIKE HUMANS WHEN YOU WANT YOUR DOG TO FIGHT YOU WANT HIM AT THE LOWEST WEIGHT POSSIBLE WITH TAKING AWAY FROM HIS STRENGTH OR ENEGRY IN OTHER WORDS NOT STARVING HIM BUT HAVING HIM ON A STRICT DIET SO THEY MAYBE 25-40LBS WHEN YOU SEE THEM BUT OTHER BREEDERS I KNOW KEEP THE BIGGEST OR PICK OF THE LITTER AND BREED THE PICK FROM 1 LITTER WITH THE OTHER AND THANKS TO TODAYS TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGHS IN WEIGHT GAIN AND MUSCLE ENHANCEMENT JUST LIKE BODY BUILDING HUMANS THEY DOGS ARE GETTING BIGGER THAN EVER THROUGH VITAMINS AND EXTREMELY HIGH PROTEIN DIETS SO IF THE DOG IS PROPORTIONAL AND CAN PERFORM AT FULL THROTTLE LIKE A PITBULL SHOULD WITHOUT BEING MOVING ODD OR "GOOFY" I BELIEVE YES THESE ARE FULL BLOODED PITS BUT FROM MY PERSONAL CONTACT WITH THE NEW BULLY BRED PITS AND 100LBS,24-26 INCH HEAD DOGS 75% OF THEM ARE UNPROPORTIONAL AND I THINK THIS IS BECAUSE OF CONSTANT LINE BREEDING I AN MOST OF THEM SEEM SLIGHTLY DEFORMED BUT THE OTHER 25% ARE JUST FREAKS OF NATURE AND ARE TRULY AMAZING SO NO PITS SHOULD BE A 100LBS IF THE ARE GETTING PROPER EXERCISE AND A HEALTHY DIET NOT POWER PACKED BUT HEATHLY SO A BIG PIT BESIDES THE OCCASIONALLY "BEAST" SHOULD BE 18-21" AND 65-85LBS.........NONE OF THIS APPLYS TO RED NOSE PITS THEY ARE JUST NATURALLY HUGE FROM HEAD TO TOE

i personally like a short stocky pit and i had a pit that weighed in at 103 of solid muscle and he was purebred to the fullest and he didnt miss a beat he was fast on top of the fact he could manuever like no other pit ive ever seen and as far as putting a dog in a fight ring dont think that because a dog is 100plus that he cant cut it so iggy can go ahead and think she knows what shes talking about but ive been breeding pits since i was twelve so i might just know a little bit ;)

To say that Pit Bulls are not working dogs is false. Many people in the southern U.S. use pits to hunt boar and put food on the table.

To say Pits are terriers is a half truth. The breed was created by crossing the old "true" working English bulldog and an extinct breed of terrier.Don't dis it's bull dog heritage eh! :)

The Pit Bull was created and developed for the sport of dog fighting. The optimum sized dog for this type of activity is around 40-50 lbs give or take a few.100 plus pound dogs don't do well in the pit because they lose speed and endurance. The blue pits you see today that exceed 100 lbs almost certainly have been crossed with Neapolitan Mastiffs somewhere along the way.I would bet that a 50 lbs Pit would destroy any of these so called giant "blue nose" dogs which by the way is a marketing ploy that targets uninformed people.

Most importantly uneducated people seem to think a larger pit must equal a tougher pit.WRONG!!!! The quality that makes the Pit Bull a special breed is gameness. This quality that has been bred into them for over 100 years is what sets them apart from all other dogs.No other breed seems to have this trait as much as the Pit does.

some pitbulss are tall because their are two types of pitbulls.. if you know about them.. their is staffordshier pitbull terrier and their is the american pitbull terrier. The american pitbull terrier is much taller and due to heavie breeding or outcrossing much much bigger. The staffordshier pitbull terrier is much lower to the ground and lighter in weight. Do your home work look around their is so many breeders and outcrossers that till this day what is a pure breed pitbull? i hate doing fighting , but it dont matter its a pitbull.. you put it in the ring its job is to fight not to win!

Some pits are tall or short just depending on ancestors.  Fourty years ago there were pits that were 20 in tall and seventy plus pounds.  They were owned by genuine dogmen but rarely used in matches. They were used to hunt like someone stated.  It all depends on what you are doing with the dog. I personally like a 18 in 65 pound dog.  I think that's ideal for what I use him for,  personal protection and show

I have seven pittbull's and not one of them weighs under 75 lbs and around 16 inches tall. They are all healthy, they are in shows.  One does great in weight pulling yet he is 70 lbs,16 inches tall.  It does not matter what size your dog is, it can still be a full blooded pittbull.  Get your facts right. The only thing the skinny dogs are used for is fighting.

First of all terriers are working dogs iggy. you should do more research of the breed.toned  cut pits are not a bad example of the breed that only means that the dog has a very good blood line or has been worked out very well. i own a bridle pit bull boy. his chest is muscular and he is bulit. his mom and dad where mated together to produce stocky pups. his mom is stocky with a block head. a medium sized pit bull is the perfect example of the breed, and i love them

True Pit bulls are medium size dogs that should not be tall and lanky and should not be overly heavy or short.  The true pit bull is a performance breed and due to this there will be some variations.  Pit bulls should not weigh over 65 pounds on average.  The body should be very terrier like, but muscular.  They should be very well proportioned.  I have been involved with pit bulls for 27 years and in my opinon pit bulls that are over the weight limit excesivly are not pure but are crossed with many forms of mastiffs and am. bulldogs and then line bred back to lines of simmilar breedings.  This produces larger dogs that resemble pit bulls, that are not as functional as true APBT.
