My dog has been diagnosed with systene bladder stones.  He had surgery to remove them.  My vet has changed his food to Science Diet U/D but no other treatment.
What else can we do to prevent them from coming back?

I bet you have a dalmatian, probably a male.  One of my dals,(the male)had bladder/kidney stones when he was about 4 years old. He also had surgery and was put on U/D.  However, he was also given a medication called Allopurinal to be administered once daily.  What they do not tell you is that this is a FOREVER thing. About 1 year after his surgery, I started feeling sorry for him because he did not seem satisfied with the bland diet so I began giving him 'brand named' expensive dog food but it turned out to have too much protein.  Dalmatians cannot have protein----that is how they get urinary stones.  I would imagine that for nay breed that would be the same.  Please check with your vet. Had I known this, my male dal would not be going in for an ultrasound tomorrow, on antibiotics, passed over 20 stones in the last 5 days, and possibly approaching another surgery. I feel like I have failed him for being ignorant.  He is now approaching 13 years old and I am really scared.  Our new vet says he looks good and she can tell he has been taken care of and had a good life and that he is not on his deathbed yet.  I pray she is right.   The U/D Prescription Food and the Allopurinal is forever.  The dose is normally 5mcg per canine pound.  Please listen to my advice.....my dear dog and I are dearly paining and paying once again. Thanks....Marie M.

My dog has the same issue.  I'm curious what answers you may have found.
