I have a pug  with kennel cough.  She is on antibiotics but I would like to give her a cough suppresant.  I have adult strength robitussin.  What would the dosage be for a 15 pound dog?

I don't have any experience with robitussin, so can not advise directly on that, you should have a vet work out the dosage for you.

However, have you had a second opinion on the kennel cough?  Many vets and owners often misdiagnose assuming what the animal has is kennel cough, and this is not always the case.  As this seems such a regular misdiagnoses it is worth having a second vet check the dog.

pugs have terrible respiratory systems as it is, so your dog could have gotten anything. most likely, it is kennel cough, and it will go away even without antibiotics. i would recommend that you not give the dog any human medicines, because even if you do the tight dosage, the dog could react to the medicine and possibly die. just keep it away from other dogs and make sure there arent any other symptoms other than the cough. good luck!

I agree with Hush. You should have two opinions about kennel cough . also, you shouldn't give a dog human medicine unless directed by a veterinarian. Maby kid cough stuff BUT , only if a licensed vet says .ya , a15 lb. dog most likely be able to stand adult strength cough stuff.

well first off -  a medicinal dose for a human is 30mg'sand that lasts around 8 hours. if you gave your dog that dose - which would be 2mgs DXM(dextromethorphan) per pound , that would probably be enough to send the poor thing into a trip - but i dont know seeing as how i havent the knowledge of how dogs react to robotussin. i'dsay look up info on DXM to know more about what it can do to humans - then you wouldnt really want to give a dog any ; www.erowid.org ;

I have a 13.5 pound female pug that has kennel cough and my vet has advised me to give her 1.5ml (or about a 1/4 tsp.) of Robitussin DM twice a day.

kennel cough could just be nothing! But then again it could be serious
Is he actually coughing or can he just not bark!
If this is the case it is because he has gone hoarse while missing you as you were obviously away from him for a while
he is probably fine
good luck though

You can obtain cough suppressants FDA approved for veterinary use in dogs from your vet.

Please do not try and dose your dog with an over-the-counter remedy meant for humans, many medicines safe for humans are toxic to your pets.

Instead of the robitussin, give the dog sorbituss. It is the same thing only it is sugar-free. I gave it to my dog when he had kennel cough. he weighed 9 lbs and I gave him 1/4 tsp every 4 hours. It really helped.

Never, ever, ever give a dog any medications that has been developed for humans! At the very least they will cause your dog to become sick and at the very most, they could cause any one or more of the dogs' organs to shut down, causing possible death! Please whatever you do, stay away from diagnosing and medicating when you have no experience in the vet field.

Be Very careful giving any animal any human medications. Their metabolisms are much different from ours and can easily overdose on what is considered to us as a small dose. Example: if you were to give a cat I aspirin it could stay with them for up to 3 days.

(atb)antibiotics are to be taken as prescribed, until the last dose is taken. robitussin masks symptoms, doesnt cure the illness. human medications should never be given to animals unless prescribed, then it is based upon weight,metabolism,counteractions with other medications such as ATB. besides rubitussin contains sedatives.
