american bulldogs are excellent at catch work and nowhere near slow. most people use a cur as a bay dog, and ambull as a catch dog. read The Working American Bulldog by Dave Putnam. AmBulls are bred for catch work.

Well dogos were bred specifically for this work so i would have to say an arg. dogo. Thjeir faster then bulldogs and more pack oriented. In argentina the boars get over 500 pounds. usually packs of 4 are used for this. I believe dogos are referred to as the ultimate big game hunter.

Performance bred standard American bulldogs are not slow by any stretch of the imagination. I think you're thinking of johnson lines which are basically american bulldogs crossed with english bulldogs and mastiffs.
Not really the same thing even though they are both called american bulldogs and often interbreed.

Scott lines american bulldogs or old english whites are excellent big game hunters.
They were actually bred by early american settlers to bring down semi-wild bulls. Their hog hunting prowess is merely a by product of this.

Dogo argentinos on the other hand were bred specifically for hunting wild boar, same goes for bull arabs. Both of these breeds are excellent boar hunters, probably the best.

I would say the 3 types I've mentioned are the top 3, in no particular order. Other than them crossbreeds seem to dominate the game, and types of bandogs.

it's the argentine dogo, all the other breeds were proven to be either too slow or lacked strength, lack of stamina and jaw strength plus dogoes excel at tracking work and are bred to disregard pain. most dogs give up the fight when the boar stabs them with it's tusks but the dogo was crossed with the ebt to endure and disregard pain.

i never said they werent good, but a vboar in the states is  of a different size than the ones in south america. pits can hold on fine, but they lack strength, stamina and speed to handle the boars here. people bring their pits all the time for contests and they never win. After 10 minutes or so a pit will get tired but  for a dogo 10 minutes is nothing.

Listen.. One American Bulldog can dot he job of taking down a wild boar anyday, they are bread for the possitive aggresion in hunting wild boar to the fullest.  There is also an alternative which is argentine Dogo which is an excellent dog.. is not as strong as an american bulldog, but faster indeed with more acceleratioon can leep at the boar and take it down easier, but with the sills of an american bulldog, there is no other dog that can compete to them.. i have 4 dogs myself, a boxer (Noah), he's just a friendly dog, i have a dogo (Zeus)he is very well trained, i have a king dobey (appolo) he is very well trained.. and my favourite of all American Bulldog (Bruno!)

american bulldogs are by far the best they are no where near slow my american bulldog jack is sixtyfivekilo/143 pound and lean all muscle and he can run down big boars no probs he catches huge boars and works well with other dogs. to the people that were talking about pits dont you realise that pits grow up to 55 kilo/130 pounds. pits are renowned for having awesome stamina thats why they can fight for like 30 minutes straight

I have only seen hog hunting dogs on the internet. With that said I do know a lot guys that practice illegal activities with dogs, though I don't agree with it.  I work at dog shelter, thats how I get my information. These people often stage mixed breed fights.  Usually using ambulls and pits, but presas and dogos often make their way into the ring.  Even the imported dogos do not usually fair too hot.  The pits are just too scrappy and the ambulls just too powerfull.  But this is about hogs.  And I would have to say as an overall hunter a dogo is better built for that.  They have longer legs and bigger lungs than either of the aforementioned breeds.  As just a catch dog, they do better than pitbulls because the hog has to work harder due to the weight of the dogo.  Now as only a catch dog and not a tracker or bay dog an ambull is just as good if not better than the dogos, as far as I've seen and heard.  But its just simple anotomy as to which dog would be the better overall hunter.  Thats what they where selectively bred for.  Pits were bred to fight well and be smaller than large dogs, feeding costs and the room they took up.  A fighter could own more dogs economically.  Ambulls were originally bred for cross duties.  To guard  estates, to drove cattle, to fight coyotes, to hunt boar, and yes to fight in the ring. Their original name was American Pitbulldog.  Thats why their are so many differences in ambulls, each breeder thought they should be specialized for something else.  Ok thats off the subject, sorry.  Yes the dogo is the best overall tracker, bay dog, catch dog out there.

The answer is:  They are all good and bad, it's really the individual dog and what you're looking to do with it.  If you want a baydog then use a catahoula, blackmouth, mountain cur or cross.  If you want a catchdog then use a pitbull, dogo, american bulldog.  A cross of any of the above lines usually makes a great running catchdog but each dog needs to be evaluated for their own abilities and all breeds have culls.

Bulldogs tend to not need to adjust there first hold, thereby saving smaller dogs on the bail,The pit at times can become catch proud, and fight other dogs there... or fight the pig...is our expericence, The Dogo, was also created to fight Puma's and Cougars...8 breeds going into the DOGO created in the 1940's by an Agentina vet..!!! How many Puma's and cougars do you ahve in your woods?NZ we have none, All Dogo'shere are in-breed, as there was only ONE breeding pair imported before they became a banned breed..!!!!So don't import a NZ Dogo...

In Germany, which has some very large boar the Great Dane was/is used as a catch dog.
The German Dane has little resemblence to the Jewish Dane ( Jew American Fu Fu Version)
They make fine hunting animals and are large, powerful, and tenaciuos. I had one you had to pry off like an Ambull.

A Dane Like this is 3 grand or so and short lived.

The Ambull ( Scott/Joshua) or the Dogo ( a very similar line ) is truly the weapon of choice for most.
The Dogo is nearly a re-creation of an ambull done this century.Ambulls wer matiff type crosses from the Brits hundreds of years ago.

Johnson bulls are FU FU garbage.
I'm sure allot were lost in N.O. since Da Brothers like them the best.Johnsons, RoCK wilaz and pitts..

I believe that any game dog of any breed pit, dogo, corso, ambull, amstaff, catahula leopard, bullmastiff, bandog etc; that has the confidence, and drive to go head on with boars and enjoy every second of it. That is the best dog for hogging. So, all in all, if the dog loves what he is doing then you will be succesfull with any breed of dog.

In my pack i have the grit of the best of cur breeds and the nose of the best hounds and the nose for tracking. Also the webbed feet for swiming and tough pads that can handel the roughest aries.Legs for a long race.Brod chest to hold more oxegen. The jaws that can lock.Nobody hunts big hogs with one dog unlesa the plan on a cut up dog..Now thats just my app.If i need more stoping power i bring out the dantzer dog.180 lb. great dane cross black lab.

Pits bull dogs have great stamina and jaw strength but you can't pull a dog off the couch and take him to chase down wild boars. The great athletic pit bulls are usually turned into pit fighters and not boar hunters. But it is true more than one pit bulldog would be needed to take down a boar weighing 500 lbs. So my vote goes to the american bulldog.

I use cocker spaniels, Honey colored ones preferred. They make the pig whirl around in circles till it falls from dizzyness then I rush in and tickle them into submission. However, a word of caution is in order, be sure to wear boots since the American Cocker is a notorious ankle biter and leg humper.

The best dog you can ever get is a female cur. They can find, and they will get gritty when needed. And another great dog is a Catahoula/ american pit. I had one and it caught anything in the woods.

AND WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT NOT BEING FAST AND NOT HAVING STAMINA, MY PITT BULL CHASED A HUSKY FOR OVER AN HOUR UNTILL THE HUSKY COULDN'T RUN ANY MORE. AND WHERE I COME FROM PEOPLE GO HUNTING WITH 1 PITT AND A GUN, THAT'S IT.

Hey I have a blackmouth curr that held a 275lb boar for nearly 25 min. last night. He was given to me because he always catches and the man wanted him to just bay. It's rare to ever hear him bark now because he always has an ear in his mouth. What I'm saying is if the dog has heart it is an excellent dog!

I like the dogs mentioned especially the dogo argentino. I had an Akita once they were bred for taking down bear and could easily take a boar. However i would not use them for boar as they are semi or long haired dogs not suited to the hot weather. I don't see ANY long haired dog suited to hunt boar it is cruel in our climates. So go the Dogo Aregentino or that mutt of an bull arab.

bull arab, 35 years of breeding. for tracking and catching scrub bulls and pigs. English bull terrier for strength and tenacity. german shorthaired pointer for size and nose(tracking). Greyhound for speed and stamina. find bail hold. 100kg plus pigs with three inch tusks are as good as dead with my two dogs. once caught 13 pigs in one night. and never saw one of them. my spotlight brokedown. those dogs scented them from the ute.

The top 4 I know of are the Dogo Argentino,APBT, AB, gritty Cur dogs. Real pit bulls and AB's have been bred for years in the sousthern states to do catch work. However the Cur dogs and Dogos run free and find there own hogs. Ask any boar hunter.

Im a hunting outfitter in sentral ca and dogs are a crucial part of my work. all the dogs listed are catch dogs. if you are going to hunt dogs in ruged terain you need dogs that can easily move long distances and move throgh thick brush. the truthe is there is no single dog that is best at every thing.  that is why having variation in your pack is important. you can not single a breed out and say all other breeds are obsolete. and honestly its more about the drive in the particular dog. catahoula is a great and versitile breed. they will bay and catch as well as hunt very well. BMC are great as well. leopard curs are tugher and faster than a hound with the nose of a hound. as far as catch dogs go, am bull dogs and dogos are great choices. a american bull being stronger and easier to handle and honestly more stable and a dogo being faster with a better nose. curs crosses and big headed jugernats all have there place in the pack.

It depends of the land and the wild boars. Many of the hogs in America, australia and other countries are so big but not so hard.In spain the hogs of 80 kilograms are more hard than others of 200. In Spain the dogs for catch are the alanos 35 kilograms that stop a bull of 500 kilograms and are used for hunting.they make prey in the ears and the man kill the hog with a knife. look it.

I only joined a couple of wild boar huntings where hog is finished with a knife after the dogs hold the animal more or less secured. Dogs were Argentine Dogo and rarely they all came out of the struggle unhurt. I remeber one which was badly wounded in the belly. His owner a farmer sutured the wound just with plain needle and  string. Nor disinfectant neither anesthesia and in the middle of the nowhere.
The dog just laid down as if his master were brushing him.
