Thought I have owned alot of breeds (mainly through rescue)I would prefer a Pit any day but for guard protection-work I would say in my experience that the American Bull Dog excels at this work. Also Rottweilers, Germen Shepards and Dobermans are also good working protection Breeds.

The DOBERMAN is the ONLY breed of dog created for the SOLE PURPOSE of PROTECTING man. It is this breed'ssole reason for existence, and are on the job 24-7; although they are also WONDERFUL pets and will often 'babysit' children. They aren't necessarily dog-fighters, but they can and will subdue any human that threatens home and family. During WWI and WWII, they would charge machine gun nests without fear. As one author and dog expert once wrote: "The doberman has no fear, not of the devil himself". You want to protect yourself and family, get a Dobe. Period. NO OTHER BREED is a better natural guard dog (Dobe'sdo NOT need protection training - as other dogs often do). APBT'scan fight other dogs well, but lack the shear, natural, PROTECTIVE explosiveness and tenaciousness of a Doberman defending his home and family. Dobes are also considered the second smartest dog. Do your research, because Dobes MUST be around family most of the day and are NOT 'outside' dogs. They want and need to be around you so often because they have an uncanny instinct to bond and protect.

Why would you want strickly an attack dog?  You want a dog just so it can attack people?  Thats not very nice for the dog, they need companionship too.  But you can not be timid at all to own a dog like this and Bullmastiff is best...German Shepherds and Dobermans need a LOT of exercise and you have to provide it for them.

the Doberman is the only breed bred strictly for the purpose of protecting his human companion. They have the most trusted abilities and can weigh a situation better than most humans. Nothing compares to this breeds protective nature, but well balanced to be an extremely affectionate dog. He beats most other breeds also because he is designed to be very, very fast, precise and agile. I owned several dobes and clocked one at 45 mph and he would probably have pushed it if I had allowed it. They have advanced sense of smell, sight and hearing as well as resistance to pain. They were literally bred to a mathematical equivalent as to a perfect protection animal. Not to mention the extreme intelligence. I have worked with dogs for years and the G shep is a close second in my opinion though I have very rarely come across one who makes a good watch out and I see this breed the most.

Look,i have seen many dogs fight (not proud) and to my knowledge the best fighting dogs are Rottweilers, Pits and the Japanese akita. the two former are obvious answers but the third is as big or bigger than the Rott and is just as viscious if not as popular(here). i totally agree with flimflam, many big dogs have been used in Africa to scare of predators, but wat u most realise is that these dogs are using their bark to scare them. lions although they could kill these animals are afraid of an animal and a very load bark that they have never seen or heard before. For example as seen before a german sherperd or doberman would be excellent at the above.
My answers:
Attack dog:Pit.

Guard dog: Doberman, Rott, Japanese Akita

All rounder but not as specialised as above.

german sherperd

For a family, I would recommend an Akita.  They are extremely loyal. This comes natural to them. Only barks when something in their area.  Other dogs can bark their heads off.  But if your Akita barks, then you can count on something being too close.  Would fight to the death for you. Not good with other animals.

Filmflam...what is a zambian zxetcal? Looked up in the net found nothing. Is the spelling correct?does it have aby other name? Just Curious

Me I go with Caucasian Ovrcharka. They are very intelligent, very attached to family members so they are good with children and protect it with the lives. They may be upto 250 pounds imagine an attack dog of that size. It can maul any opponent. They make ferocious lunge few dog at any stranger and its ferocity is possessed by very few other dogs. Its bark is enough to stun anyone. They are very territorial, their only draw back would be that they start protecting places which they have only been for as little as 10 mins so a casual sitting in the park would turn to an oppertunity to protect, even this cantbe called a real drawback when it comes to guarding. So Overall its the best guard dog, rare fierce looking know by a few.

Next would be Bull Mastiff or Presa Canario or Fila...Most well known and widely used and prooven guards woulf be Rotts, GSDs and Dobbes...Apbt and Tosa are tend to be shy towards humans so are many other dogs used for the pit fights this draw back flaws them as guard dogs but I would take nothing away from them.

The best Guard dog breeds would be a hard question to answer. From the Known breeds like German Shepherds , Rottweilers Doberman , Belgian Malinois etc , One has to go best breeders Like Dog-sports people or military Dog program advisors.
However there are some breeds that make very good guards if one has the understanding , resources ,expertise to manage these dog breeds like Caucasian Ovtcharkas , Tosas and Bully Kuttas.
One Should also remember a large amount of moral and Legal responsibilty arises out these decisions to own these Dominant aggressive breeds. Not all people can afford to shoulder such a responsibilty . One should never get these dogs for satisfying a macho attitude or some fancy.

I currently own two dobermans, a three year old female, weighing 33kilos, and a year old male, weighing 45 kilos. Although I am a biased doberman lover I am fascinated by all protective dogs. I have witnessed the watchdog/protection capabilities of friends and families dogs, such as rotts, boxers, staffs, german shepards and my mother in law currently owns cross american bulldog/bull mastiff. All the breeds have shown different attributes and have all made exceptional guard dogs. My brothers boxer and mother in laws cross are always around my dobs and my dobs not only usually come out on top in play fights they are always the best watchdogs and most protective. In my opinion, for guarding the doberman is number one.

the best guard dogs are the ones that were created forn that purpose, a guard dog must not bark a lot but atack. bullmastifs have a lot of instinkt when it comes to guarding, but there are really a lot of dogs that would do a graet job guarding like the dogo which is a hunting dog or rottweilers which were cattle dogs, however rotties are very popular now dayas so its hard to get one with a stable temper and beliebe me you dont want an unstable rottie. there are really a lot of breeds that would make great guard dogs, but you must check wich one fits your life stile for example a bully kutta would make one hell of a guard dog because it is incredibly fierce, however i wouldnt even dream about getting one here, since not all people that enter my house are intruders, and i dont want my dog killing someone for touching something in my house, besides many of these really abressive dogs are almost untrainable. good guard dogs that would fit most peoples life stile are the bullmastifs dogge du bordeaux, boerboels, dogos, rotties(if you manage to get a good one dont just buy the largest one, but try to get a working one that follows the standards), any of these breeds would be able to kill anyone without any problem, german shepherds and pinschers can be really scary hoever not as determined as other guard dogs,so they are somewere between watchdogs and guard dogs. pitbulls unlike what most people think are supposedto be very people friendly but very dog agressive, however quite silent, tempr kind of like a bull terriers.there are really lots of breeds, its really all about which one fits you.

I reckon that the presa canario would excell at this line of work. This is because they are basically large pitbulls with great protection qualities. This is an unsurpassed guard dog. Its presence is enough to detter anyone and it also has the capability to stop man or beast. These dogs can protect you from people, large animals and other fighting dog breeds. Therefore i would recommend the presa, for it will destroy most of the other guard dog breeds in a dog fight. No good to have a guard dog that can be devoured by a staffordshire terrier or any other fighting dog.

giant schnauzer, I owned one and he protected the family and the house all the time. No one would dare challenge him, and any dog that threated him got seriously injured, including a pitbull at the beach one day.
Most importantly he was a great loving family dog and only aggressive when he needed to be.
