Need advice- I have 2 Rott's(2.5 yrs old) have had them since they were 6 wks old, male and female (brother and sister) have taken them to training and they have been doing really well up until recently, as brother and sister they have had there squabbles, my female is the Alpha of the two, what ever one is given the other also has however recently they are getting extremely nasty to each other to the extent of my female actually puncturing my male's ear and him needing stitches over what I think may be Rawhides!!  I have taken all the bones and rawhides away from them but am puzzled as to their behaviour towards each other, does any one have any ideas or suggestions, I am a little concerned that it may leak over into other things. Appreciate your thoughts.....

either the male was trying to establish dominance or was trying to get the females rawhide.  I have a 4 yr old male rottie and just recently adopted an 8 month old female rott/pit bull.  he is dominant and aware that we will not put up with him getting aggressive over food or toys.  that kind of behavior is unacceptable.

I have had the female for about 4 months now.  There has been no issue about food so far and they play all day, she tries to sleep with him.  she steals his ball to get him to play with her and while they both have scratches from all the rough-housing they do, there has been no punctures or bite marks on either of them.  they usually end up eating out of each others bowls and she eats most of his food - he'll just watch her.

maybe you should crate both dogs when you are not home and if you notice they are getting aggressive with each other over food/bones then punish them.  good luck.

Two things.......one, rawhides are really not good chews for dogs, I understand you've been doing it for a while but it's not good for their teeth.  A raw bone from the butcher is a MUCH better choice and it actually cleans their teeth.....no tartar to worry about!

Second......rawhides are a HIGH VALUE treat item.  If you are going to give them as treats my SUGGESTION would be to give them in the dog's crate.  Then you won't have to worry about them getting at each other.  And if they growl at each other you can just tell them to KNOCK IT OFF!  :o)

Good luck, please keep us posted.
