There were many causes and it takes a lot of in-depth research to answer thoroughly. As far as I know, the causes of American and Australian involvement were anti-communism, and also for Australians to show support for America. The domino-theory meant we had to try and act fast because, if Vietnam fell to communism, it would only be a matter of time before the other dominos in the row fell, too. Vietnam was divided into communism and democratic governments, and the two halves were fighting to unite the nation. So really, what should have been a civil war became an international war when America stuck their beaks in (sorry, couldn't resist :P), full of brutal attrocities on America's part and brought regret and embarassment to the whole world. I'm currently studying this for school and this is all I know so far :)

the Vietnam War was caused by Franklin Roosevelt who got his big fat nose into bussiness that he shouldn't have gotten into.  So he tried to run the vietnameesees' lifes.  This resulted in angry, war wanting, vietnameese.  And so the Vietnam War began.

There was no actual fixed beginning.  The U.S. entered the war gradually.  The biggest reason for the war was probably communism, though.

here is one of the causes:
1)Vitenam was split into North and South. the north were communists under the rule of Ho chi Minh (indochinese communsit party). The south was democratics with the US support. Some people in the south supported the cause of the north. These people were called Vietcong!!!!!!!!!!!!

The U.S. was afraid that if one nation fell to communism, the other surrounding countries would too. This is called the "Domino" theory. The other solid reason was that they wanted the French to end this war quickly and get back to watching West Germany (part of the cold war agreement). The U.S. offered funding and training to the French and South Vietnam military. Consequently, the South Vietnam military was using U.S. weapons.
