I have installed a new outside lighting unit near my back door, and after it is on and lit for around 20 minutes, it begins to flicker and go on and off in a consistant pattern.
What is causing this and how do I fix it?

You didn't indicate either an incandescent or fluorescent fixture.Try changing to a new lighting element first. If the problem persist you may have a poor connection somewhere which especially shows up faster with a higher wattage lamp due to heated and intermittent contacts. If all connections are Ok, check that you have proper or verified true ground and neutral.

sounds like you have a loose  wire (probably at the wire nut), when it gets warm it separates slightly, enough to cause a flicker, you should fix this , it could cause a fire

You may have a loose connection somewhere. Your transformer or bulb may be overheating as well. Check to make sure your not using the wrong bulb. I had this type of problem and it was simply because I purchased the cheap home center lights and they kept failing. I ended up purchasing from Contractors Choice Lighting in California 2 years ago and have had no problems. They have a web site www.ccl-light.com. Hope this helps you out. Donna Rey Florida
