I am seeking information on Italian rail travel.  From my research, it seems that for a journey over 200km you have 24 hours to complete it and can stop en route.  I am thinking of buying a point to point ticket Venice to Rome, and stopping in Florence.  Postings on various websites have conflicting information on the 24 hour period.  I had assumed that it started when the ticket is validated for departure from Venice, however some sites seem to suggest that if I were to validate the ticket again in Florence I would extend the life for another 24 hours.  Has anyone had any experience of this sort of trip?  I realise that I can stop for a few hours in Florence and then travel on to Rome, however I would like to stay overnight if possible.

Yes, you can hop on and off any point to point train journey as long as it is an open ticket and not a reserved train like the Eurostar Italia trains.  The validity is actually longer- I believe it is 2 months for most tickets.  You can check out www.italiarail.com for a good source of information and schedules for Italy trains
