Can you get your labrador retriever shaved or get a hair cut? Mine has such a thick coat that it seems very hot and the dog pants excessively - will getting her shaved cool her off or damage her personality?

Don't shave a dogs hair if it is going to be in sunlight. The outer layer of fur is what protects the dog from sunburns, etc. so your dog will be worse of without the coat. Make sure the dog has plenty of shade and cool water and it'll be fine. If the day is excessively hot, put a fan or pillowcase full of ice near your dog so s/he can stay cooler.

I had to cut a small amount of hair of my Labrador retriever who is currently 20 weeks old and I was wondering how long it will take to grow back.

Of course you can shave your labrador retriever.  If a dog has an extremely thick coat, even when shaved, the fur completely covers the skin.  I have a Lab mix dog and I shave her sometimes and she is BEAUTIFUL that way.  It helps alot with the fur all over the house too!
