Basically, Thin client is web based application and most of the processing done on server side.

Thick client is installed into client side, it is still connected to server but most of the processing done on client side.

Roughly, with thick client, there won't be much processing via the network. In a way, it will be much faster option if your network is slow or congested.

In a client server architecture, a Thin client has little or no application logic, and so it has to depend on the server for processing.
A thick client does most of the processing in itself and sends only the data required for communications to the server. This reduces the network bandwidth effectively

A thick client does processing on the client. JVM to JVM has nothing to do with it. A thick client accepts data from the server, and processes it on the client.

A thin client is a view only. All processing is performed on the server, at which time the server gives back only the view. The clients only responsibility is to present it.
