A female dog should not be bred before 1 1/2 years of age or the third heat. Whichever comes first is OK. Males will start getting "instincts" at about 6 months of age and can breed anytime there after.

Let me point out that a dog CAN get pregnant as young as 6 months but SHOULDN'T until 1 1/2 years. If your dog is extra large or small (Great Dane, Chihuahua) wait until 2 years to breed.

WRONG! You shouldn't breed a dog until 2 years of age at the least! Dogs should be certified with OFA & CERF and MUST pass both of these in order to even consider breeding a dog. Put your dog in conformation shows. If your dog becomes a champion, you can breed it only if he/she has a stable temperment. If your dog doesn't win in dog shows, it's NOT breeding quality. Just cuz it's AKC doesn't mean that it is breeding quality, it doesn't even mean it's purebred!
Have you seen "silver" labs? They're not purebred but they can be registered. Are you perpared to have your dog die while giving birth? This happens often. Also what about a C-section. That can cost up to $2000!!

If you have to ask this question, you shouldn't be breeding dogs.

well I have 3 beautiful labs 2 champion boys(with hunting titles in akc) and 1 gorgeous chocolate female that is going to breed. My eldest dog ,Champ, is altered(He is a retired champion show dog)my other dog Cooper is a yellow male. We will wait 2 years for Cooper and 2 years for our beautiful Coco(chocolate lab)so they will have even more titles and better genes. Hope this helps!
