I am moving into a small duplex in a bad area, I need a good guard dog for protection but I also want it to be a friendly pet.  I am looking at the Staffordshire bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier, and the American pit bull terrier.  What are the differences and which would be best for me?

Those are fighting dogs, if you want your dog to protect you against other dogs they are great.  If you want your dog to protect you against humans they are not a good choice.  They are just as likely to watch you die as help you, you never know with them.  Get a doberman or german shepherd or maybe a fila or something, they are good against people.
