i addopted a male chi who seems to be older than i was told. he is graying on his muzzle and above his eyes. his teeth are showing signs of rot above the gum line. any idea how old he may be? by the way i was told he was 18 months.

He's definitely in his declining years, but it's hard to give an estimate without actually seeing him.  I suggest you get him to a vet ASAP and have his teeth attended to.  The vet should be able to give you a better idea of how old the dog is.  I would definitely take that report back to the place from where the dog was adopted and see what they have to say.

BTW, thank you for adopting, giving a dog a loving home is one of the greatest gifts there is.

Maybe he has naturally white hair on his snout. My little Chalupa is just over a year old with white fur on her muzzle and upper chest. The rest of her is reddish tan. It looks to me like she is wearing a t-shirt with a reddish tan jacket. Even though her muzzle is sort of  white at the end you can still see she is young becouse of her shiny eyes and solid white teeth. From the sound of your description your pet does seem to sound older but hey all dogs are deserving of love  and respect reguardless of their age. Take care:)

Willa raises an excellent point, I made the assumption that the graying was obviously not a normal part of the dogs coloring.

Thanks CHIMAMA:)  I'm just trying to be helpful by sharing my point of views  with my fellow chihuahua guardiansIt's beautiful how nature can come up with all it's amazing colors and patterns for animals. Nature is one fantastic artist. I just love  Chalupa's  little white T-shirt and snout.
Take care
