My 1995 Jetta reverse gear ( 5 sp manual transmission ) went, started off making noise, now just grinds and does not engage, all other gears work fine. What could be causing this and is it something I can fix? ( I am moderately skilled but could manage most repairs with detailed instructions )

Go for it. It is easy.
Much to the dismay of my wife, I rebuilt one on the kitchen table one rainy afternoon (that explains my 8 marriages).
I did not have instructions. I test-drove it in the front yard of the owner of the local Transmission shop at 3:00am. It works just fine and I made it to 4th gear before the wheels quit throwing sod.(That explains my missing two front teeth and broke nose).

Hey my '97 Golf did the same thing.  I have the tranmission out of the car, need a manual or instructions for disassembly and reassembly.  It appears that this is a common problem with these transmissions.  Can anyone help us.

It can be fixed but, it is pretty involved, it a small gear that is easly damaged.  You split the case & replace the gear, if it does not back up any time you probable ruined the 2nd main gear that is even harder & costly to replace, I just replaced the small one today! fun fun!!

The not engaging, I don't know. Must be a worn gear. I know the n01s3 is normal, but that's it. Maybe chek tranny fluid.

I have a '96 with the same problem.  The reverse broke when somone slid into the guard rail.  Jettas used to be 4 speeds, then they added a 5th gear, and in doing so they weakend the reverse, which is now a common problem.m  I don't know how to fix it though.

i also had a 95 jetta that made a clicking noise in reverse!  all the other gears worked fine. it always went into reverse but always make a clicking noise. i had it checked out and they told me it was a broken tooth in the gear, due to where reverse is in the car. well, it never gave me any real problems, but it was annoying!i have since driven other jettas/golfs and they do it too! i noticed that it is the year 95 that does it. hope this helps

Your reverse (st gear) is chewed off in the lower gear case. you may also have damage to the gears on the main shaft and aux shaft. visual will determine this. good luck
