I am filling out an I-485 and I also had trouble deciding which number is the Visa Number.  According to the information that I have found, it is the "RED" number on the visa, not the Control Number.

Here are a couple of links that I used to determine which number to use.  Copy and paste them to your browser to view them:

First of all, the things call visa and everythings there has a name except the red number.  So, the red number is the visa number but the control number is not.

I just read on immigration.com FAQ/Forum that it is not the control number but it is the RED number that is at the bottom of the VISA.

Please post updated answers if you find it otherwise.
