I have a 96 Dodge Avenger.  This morning, the check engine light came on and stayed on. My car runs fine.  I don't have any hesitations within the car as far as stalling or anything of that nature.  I checked the gas cap and it is on properly.  Does anyone have any suggestions or similar problems.

I also have a 96 Avenger and I noticed that the check engine light comes on only when it it raining outside.  When it stops raining and the car thoroughly dries out, the light goes off.  Only once did I notice that when it was raining VERY hard that the light came on and my car had some hesitation... otherwise, the car runs fine with light on.

If you were to have the code read off of your cars computer there's a good chance that it would be an O2 sensor. Since it's not a big enough factor to effect performance you wouldn't notice anything but the computer does.  I've had to replace mine, it's very easy to do. It looks like a miniature spark plug with a wire connected to it, it is screwed directly into the intake manifold.

i have a 97 eclipse which is pretty much the same thing. the check engine light was on after i replaced a few filters and wouldnt go off. come to find out i hadn't put the air filter lid back on all the way. these cars are really sensitive about things like that so just kinda look around ur engine.

when your check engine light comes on the easiest way to find the  problem is to take it to advanced auto parts.they will run a diagnostic check for free.Beware... some codes are dealer only codes

The question involving Check Engine light; more than likely O2 sensors. If the performance worsens with increased mileage it is a sure thing!

I think it must just be the Avenger, cause I have a 97 and the engine light comes on and stays on for a week or two at a time, then goes off, and doesn't come back on for a couple months. And nothing is ever wrong, I've had it looked at a couple times.

my avenger check engine lite has come on several times, my son ran a diagnostic check and it showed as a backfire with out a reset it went out after a while. but it did come on and wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear, it got towed and a new transmission was installed. don't guess get a diagnostic check.

I have an '88 Thunderbird and have the same problem.  A friend advised that I check to make sure that the parking brake was fully off.  I found that when I move the parking brake pedal slightly the light does go off which indicates that there is a faulty contact that causes the problem.  No biggy - I just ignore it for now - will;; check it out when I have nothing better to do.

as far as happening when it rains you probaly need a coil or just new plug wires if its not just when it rains it could be anything. if you have an exsust leak it could be the o^2 sensers reading off. other wise get a hold of an ob2 scaner and check you codes

it is most likely a grounding issue, i would say look under your hood and check to make sure the grounding cable is on the transmission and also on the motor. there might more then them two i am not sure but i think that it will help you with your problem
