I wantb to install a ceiling fan in the center of my living room ceiling on the first floor. It is a 2 - story house. How do I run wires to the fan from a wall outlet or switch through the ceiling joists which I cannot see or access w/o tearing the gypsum board ceiling. can you please help? Thanks.
Do I need a fish wire? how do I drill holes in the joists to pass the wire? If you can draw a sketch will help a lot.

First, figure out which direction the joists run -- it is easiest to go parallel to them.  With any luck, going from where you want to put the fan along the joists will lead to a closet or other area of hidden ceiling at one end or the other.  Getting power to THIS point is another exercise.

You will need to get one of those trick ceiling fan boxes that has a turnbuckle to expand and push pins into the joists (You can get them at Home Depot, and probably other places, too).

Find some way of getting a fish tape or other stiff wire into the "hidden" end of the joist gap.  Cut a hole sized for your fan box at the place you want the fan to be -- preferably not too near the joist on either side.  Run the fish tape from the hidden side until it reaches/passes the hole where you'll put the fan.  Snag the fish tape, and use it to pull your wire.  (Or better yet, send string back on the fish tape and pull the wire through with the string.  Now that you have a wire you can later power to the hole, put in the fan bar and box, hang and wire the fan, then go back and turn the power on.

first find the stud area on wall that you desire for the switch . then cut out or saw the square hole for your "old work" pvc lite box {with the flip tabs that secures to the drywall.} then find the center of ceiling ,following the path of your new switch box and go up to corner of wall and ceiling . proceed to hole-saw using an 1.5 or 2 inch saw and cut hole in wall and then hole in ceiling in line with other hole. oh yea --make sure your in the hollow of the wall and ceiling. then use or borrow a "right angle drill with a 3/4 inch wood bit in order to drill through the wall plate to the ceiling hollow. then using a 12 gauge solid wire or a fish wire , snake it through wall sw. box to wall hole then through ceiling hole . you will need needle -nose pliers to grab it along the way. remember --this is assuming that your ceiling joists are running in the right direction!!! then cut out the hole for your light -box in the mid-ceiling and fish it to that point --allowing 10 inches to stick out. connect the 2-wire 14/awg romex cable and slowly yank it through. when finished ,stuff holes with -hard foam and spackle over. finally --bring your feeder line from your service panel or other source and drill hole through sub- floor{if running from service panel}in basement into the designated wall stud-slot area and terminate WITH THE POWER OFF!
