I have a 1994 VW Jetta CL. When I lock the driver's door-autolock for all the car- the motor is spinning, but usually the passenger and rear-driver doors remain unlocked. After 1-2 min, the spinning stops and the alarm system comes on. It almost seems there is not enough power to push the door knobs down. What could be the problem?

Chances are that one of the vacuum lines are not connected properly they run through the doors in the screw type connector where your wiring comes through, push them in or check to see that they are sealing tight.

I have the same car and have had the same problems.. the problem is that the door locks are powered by VACUME, there is a pump in the truck that will run to lock and unlock the doors.. what probably has happened is that the vacume hose has come undone inside one of the door jamb boots.. its an easy fix, just pull back the black rubber boots that connect the doors to the body, and you will see a red(usually) hard plastic vacume line that plugs into a soft rubber port.. the loose connection is probably in the one of the rear doors.. Try this before ya spend $60+ an hour for a mechanic to figure this out..

check the hoses that run thru the back of the pump that lead to the doors the rubber boots on top of the door hinges they might be loose causing an air leak and in which case your other 3 lock will not close

I have the same problem with my 1994 jetta, and from looking online it appears the problem is common. the power locks are controlled by a motor in the trunk, and that motor is creating the whining noise you hear as it makes its continuous effort to move all the locks. i think the lock system operates on air pressure, ie the lock controlling motor in the trunk pushes the air down some tubes which are connected to the locks in each door. thus the problem could be that the tubes involved become cracked and split or that the connectors between the doors and the car body are loose. (a great example of german over-engineering which inevitably falls apart) would like to hear if anyone has solved this common problem without great expense??
