Hi there
I have a male named Beethoven or Bates for short.  He is very protective.  I think he has 'little man syndrome'.  He is verrrry bossy and arrogant (in the nicest possible way).
We did not find him easy to toilet train however that is well behind us now and once he learnt he never made a mistake again.
My husband thinks he is too 'clever' to learn silly dog tricks?!!  He's just like one of the kids and we love him dearly.  All the best...

I have a male (Brewer) and my best friend has his sister (Brinkley).  We have not noticed much of a difference.  Every puppy is different, just like kids.  Potty training takes patience and persistence, regardless of the breed.  My advice, if you are interested in getting a puppy, is to visit with several and find the one that clicks with your personality, then look at whether it's a male or female...try not to go into this decision with a prejudice that on gender is less than another.  Like I said, they're just like kids...and they are going to be part of the family.

I am on my third Shih Tzu. This is our first male and he is very loving and has such spunk. We were a little scared to get a male since we have had such wonderful luck with our previous two females. I have found no difference in either one. Fluffy, whom I had gotten when I was only 4, was unfortunatly hit by a car, was a great dog. She was very protective of my family but loving to any stranger as well. Our second one, Annie, was full of energy and excitement. We thought she deserved a family that would be home more than we could then so we sold her. Maxwell, our first male, is an awesome companion.  I couldn't have asked for a better dog. I love this breed b/c you can be so affectionate and they eat it right up and then ask for more.  I recommend this breed, male or female, to anyone!

We have 10 shih tzus in our family and my personal favorites are the males. They are very loving and affectionate. I would recomend getting them neutered before a year old so they don't become possessive, etc. The females we have had have been great dogs also but tend to be stuck up...especially around new people. Go with a male and neuter it early.

I personally think female Shih tzus are better than males. I have a female Shih tzu and she didn't get spayed and she still is very affectionate. I used to have a male dog and it was just terrible! It would run away all the time and was never affectionate to me. Female dogs are much more loyal than male ones. I do not recommend buying a male dog.

I would have to go with male. I never had a shih tzu but know well enough since my grandma and friend does. My friend had a male and female. The female was sweet but had a mind of her own. The male was always in a good mood. The female tho was also kind of lazy. After a 9 years the female died. She got more and more layed back everyday but the male was still as happy since we got him. No matter how old he was.

I found my male at the shelter and love him more and more every day. I only wanted female dogs in the past, but now that he is in my life, in the future this breed will be the one I stay with and I will go for the male if possible. He is not bossy, just lovable and I am his Alpha.

She adores my 6 year old son.  It does not matter if you want a girl or boy.
What really matters is the dogs basic temperment and the temperment of its mother and father.

I have a one year old male shih tzu.  He is loving, affectionate and smart.  He gets along great with people and other pets (I have a rottie and cat).  I am presently taking care of a 5 month old female shih tzu, she is hard to train, independent and less affectionate.  I am getting another shih tzu in September and based on my experience, I will be getting another male.

I think female shih-tzu more affectionate and lovable than male, i used  to have lots of male dogs in the past and tasha is my first female puppy she is very adorable and cute. also with female dogs its easy to train them to litter, because they dont spray then goin to the toilet.

She loves my hubbby but only wants to play with him and is loving to me. I wouldn't trade her for anything but man is she stubborn. Are females that way?

I have a 8month old Shihtzu, Wolfie. He is the best dog I've ever owned. Before I had female cockers and mixed breeds. But this little boy is a real good boy. Fun, cuddly, and smart. He was easy to house train. Wolfie loves people and they love him. My mother has a two year old shihtzu named Mr. Poppy who is also very smart and friendly. We were told by a breeder that the males are more affectionate and I find it true in our cases. This breed is wonderful.

My 2 (soon to be 3)male shih tzu puppy is very very intelligent for him to be a shih tzu- most people say  how hard it is to train a shih tzu since they are sooooo stubborn and don't want to pay attention. he was potty trained within 3-5 days. he now knows over 20 commands but people say that you can only train them very little. i hope as he grows older he will learn even more.

I've a male Shih Tzu, named Benji. He's really adorable, loving and fun to be with. He's really something you'll always look forward tor when you are back from work or anything. He's also great to play with. However, sometime he's too playful and he's force you to play with him by biting your hand or feet. For me whether it's a male or female, as long as you care and love him/her, you'll have your share in return.

I have always had poodles my whole life nothing else, I babysit for a friends male shihtuz and I think I have found the love of my life, I NEVER thought I would ever find another breed that would win my heart but this little guy is like a stuffed teddybear.
My next dog will be a shihtuz, I have never cared for males due to the marking so I would go with a female, I think they act the way they are raised, Like a poodle if you allow them to be alpha they will be you have to let any breed know who's the boss!

no matter male or female, expect personality and you won't be disappointed. as for training, i'msure it will have you trained in no time. they can be stubborn. just be patient and constant. I don't think they forgive injustices easily. go easy . keep it sweet. what goes in must come out and they don't hold it long. very thirsty pups. expect alot of trips outdoors. Mine only asks to go out once. i don't ignore her anymore.she trained me well.

Male dogs are definitely more affectionate in my opinion, females usually have mood swings were they can be affectionate one minute and the next be grumpy and reserved. Males can never get enough love but with females, when they've had enough attention they'll go away and not care.

On the other hand, males are more easily distracted during training without being "disobedient", and females seem to be more focused.

We have a two year old male shih tzu that we got from a rescue group. He is VERY affectionate and loving, and he's a true "baby" in the family. We spoil him rotten. I used to know a couple who had a male and female, and the male was more outgoing. The female was very standoff-ish. It really depends on the dog. Some males are better, some females are better.

We have had 5 males and 1 female Shih-tzus. Our experience has been that the males are more affectionate and the female more independent.  All have been loving and very devoted.  The female is much more capable of entertaining herself but the males have been more cuddly. This is a wonderful breed and is happy either being a clown or catching a nap in the sun.

I've had a female 14 years and once she died, I have a male, now 9 mos.  As another reader expressed, they are clown dogs, happy, love everyone they meet and they "expect" that even virtual strangers will react like they are the cutest things on 4 legs and they are rarely proven wrong!!! The female had feminine whiles while the boy is more rowdy, but equally affectionate.

My dog, ally, is a female dog and she is veryy affectionate. She'll greet us with hugs and kisses every day. She'll get as close to us whenever possible. She'll actually give hugs by resting her head on your neck. She was actually quite easy to train. We would give her a treat everytime she came in from outside, and then she finally got the picture.
