I have a seven year old golden. She's not crazy about the hot weather and seems to pant a lot. I am undecided as to whether or not I should clip her in a puppy cut for the summer. I have heard that a dog's fur is a natural coolant. I don't know if that is an "old dog's tail" or if it is true, but only for some breeds.
I would appreciate feedback on this issue.
Thanks,
Peegh

The "old dog fable" is true. Your dog needs the outer layer of fur to protect her from the sun. She'll be fine if she has shade and plenty of cool water. If it is an extremely hot day, give her an electrical fan or a cool bath or something like a pillow case full of ice to sit by.
