Australian support for South Vietnam in the early 1960s was in keeping with the policies of other nations, particularly the United States, to stop the spread of communism in Europe and Asia. In 1961 and in 1962, Ngo Dinh Diem, leader of the government in South Vietnam, repeatedly asked for assistance from America and its allies to help its security. Australia eventually accepted and sent 30 military advisers from the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam. By 1965 it was obvious that South Vietnam could not be beaten by the communists, so America sent over 200,000 more troops and requested its allies more support from its allies (Australia).

australia joined the vietnam war to help and support its ally america.
although not everyone was agreeable to that decision

1960
"in universities, Vietnam became the protest issue students had been looking for:
proof that the older generation could not run the world. they agreed with Abbie Hoffman that no one over 30 could be trusted..
(lol... watch "children of the corn")

1964
"no serious protests developed until after the introduction of constription(Nov 1964) and the decision to send Australian troops (Mar 1965)"

1965
"100 methodist clergy stged a vigil for peace outside Parliament House. The Catholic Church was opposed to the anti-war protests."

the move to send in australian troops greatly annoyed the public of australia
and then On the 11th of November 1964, the Liberal Party "...introduced the National Service Bill in the House of Representatives..." It was reported that this would consist of "A limited call-up of 20 year olds for two years? service at home or abroad..."if you did not register you had 18 months jail.

5 months later Menzies sent conscripted ppl to vietnam because america asked him, although this was before he was asked to by korea and he told the public that south korea asked for help.in the domino effect
(which was that if communism came to south korea it would spread to america and then eventually australia)

Lindonn B Johnson was the american president at that time.
They (the protesters)had to improvise,
so they broke the lines in Macquarie St
and lay down on the street,
in front of the Presidential car.
According to Mitchell
(I suspect he's queer as well as a stupid
liar) What *actually* happened, is that he and LBJ in the car and a
nervous Police Commission Allen (who was a silly idiot like Mitchell)
came to the car and asked Bob Askin what to do. "Run the bastards
over!" he said, which horrified Allen, and as soon as he'd gone he and
LBJ killed themselves laughing. Everyone but the wankers agreed with Askin, who was reelected in a landslide. No one was run over

1967 non violent students supported the enemy
SDS- students for a democratic society

1968 "radicals" "militant students"
students becams more radical and violent student rebel violent confrontations

1969 student reble more if possible
-war was an ally
ppl started to believe the was couldn't be won
and the majority of people wanted the troops back

Nixon started the theory of vietnamisation..
in which the vietminh would take ova the world..(not very optimistic are they??)

draft resisters (ppl who protested against the draft) protested and burnt their register cards

Harry Van Morse
student movement more broader

May 8th 1970
big protest-melb
           - support NLB(national labour party)
australian moratorium-peaceful

1971
*domino theory dead
*all troops withdrawn
*conscription died

1972
gough whitlam was elected and the labour party abolished conscription and the protest movement withered away

the proteset movement included these groups

YOUTH CAMPAIGN AGAINST CONSCRIPTION (YCAC)
"we are only a political pressure group... the only thing that can be done is the repeal of the National Service Act by changing govt and getting labour in."

SAVE OUR SONS (SOS)
formed by joyce golgerth and pat askcroft in june 1965
'mothers joining together to voice their opposition to the conscription of their sons, for the slaughter of vietnam'
(if more info is needed e-mail me)

VIETNAM ACTION COMMITEE (VAC)
bob gould-left wing labour activist
1966-supporters=1,500 mailing list of 5,000.

australia was in the goddamn war.......how stupid can you get 'whatever'...
the main reason for australia to be involved was because menzies (our govt then) feared communism. south vietnam than was a democracy when they were being attacked by north vietnam who was under communism.
the vietnam war was just our reaction to the threat of communism...

Australia was involed in the Vietnam war because,it was trying to stop communism and again support the allies(Americans) because they supported us in the war and saved our butts!!! so we also had to support them , otherwise we would breach our alliance with them.which is not fair to them...

Australia's involvement in Vietnam was small compared to that of the United States with its commitment of over 500 000 troops. australian troops in Vietnam peaked at 8300 in 1968. Vietnam was Australia's longest war, and spread over a decade from 1962. It was also the most divisive military involvement in Australia's history

whatever: only about... lemme think... ALL of Australia's armed forces served in Vietnam! mebbe u were thinking of the wrong war? there were two, the other one was Vietnam and China.

anyways, Australia was involved in Vietnam by following America's lead. Australia started doing this during WWII, when the British airfields in Singapore were attacked and overrun by the Japanese with ease. at this point Australia realised that Britain wasn't dependable on providing protection, as Australia itself only had 5 million people and was therefore a puny country. so it turned to the most powerful country it could find - America, and stuck with it ever since. that was mainly why Australia became involved. there was also a fear of communism in Australia at the time, which Robert Menzies escalated with a scare campaign, this ultimately landed him in office. it would have looked good for menzies to go to war with vietnam.

Australia traditionally became involved in the Vietnam War due to "collective security" and as part of the anti-Communist "crusade" to contain a world wide communist threat. However, the decision to become involved was not just a heroic decision made by Australia, but rather to assist the US in the Vietnam War to strengthen the relationship between Canberra and Washington, as well as to dimmer the idea of communist expansionism in Asia.

australia was involved in the vietnam war because the government of australia was afraid that communism was spreading closer and closer to australia and that they feard it would take over and australia would become a comunist country to. at the first hearing of the involvement australia was going to be putting in to the war australian people didnt care and agreed with it but then came conscription and the parts of australia rebelled at the thought of there sons and husbands being snt overseas to kill inocent people. there were groups formed such as sos(save our sons),SDS.VMN(vietnam moratorium movement)and also the older generations and the hippies.

They became involved in order to try and stop the domino effect of communism,  the iron curtain across eastern europe had now began to extend across to asia ( the Bamboo curtain) with china a communist power and the invasion previously of Korea and now Vietman. America felt threatened by the big communist movement and felt compelled to assist South Vietman in eradicating it. Australia was allied with the US and therefore felt that they needed to assist thier allies in this war. In order to keep our own borders safe and to stomp out the communist threat.

Brief Report

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Other Predictors of Health Care Consumption by Vietnam Veterans
Richard P. Marshall, B.A., Dip.Psych., Anthony F. Jorm, D.Sc., Ph.D., David A. Grayson, Ph.D. and Brian I. O'Toole Ph.D.
A total of 641 randomly selected Australian veterans of the Vietnam War were interviewed about their use of health care in the previous two weeks to determine what factors contributed to health care consumption. Seventy-three variables were examined by univariate linear regression and then grouped into seven categories relating to age, physical and mental health, predisposition to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), deployment and repatriation experiences, and membership in veterans groups. PTSD was associated with an additional cost of $79 in health care for the two-week period. Each physical diagnosis was associated with an additional $28. Alcohol consumption was not related to health care costs. Other important variables contributing to costs were depression, educational status, the quality of the repatriation experience, and social support.
