What does a 220 volt "double pole" breaker do that makes it different than simply using 2 110 volt "single pole" breakers to run 2 hots to a 220 volt outlet?

very simple,it's the handle tie on the breaker.should a fault occur on one of the phases,it will kill the whole circuit,ie.both phases at the same time will shut off. that way,a person working on it knows that both phases are dead, and won't be electrocuted.if only one phase shuts off while the other stays hot and the appliance is in the on position, the other circuit will continue to feed thru and get ya.
