Generally what you describe is the results of worn or defective valve guides and valve seal. Overtime, and while the engine is static, small amounts of oil will leak down the valve guides. When you start the engine the oil the leaked down the valve guide get burned. The same defective parts will produce the smoke because you have a high intake manifold vacuum at idle. The high vacuum draws the oil into the combustion camber and even thru to the exhaust. When you drive off the combustion temperatures rise and burn the oil. Once you have a load on the engine (driving) the manifold vacuum is low, reducing the amount of oil that seeps into the combustion chamber. Also while driving, the higher combustion temperatures burns the oil at a temperature that does not leave a visible exhaust.
