My first new chic, a male 11 weeks old, we got him when he was 7 WKS. the breeder we got him from lives across town so we didn;t have to go far . he is only 2lbs now. A fawn color. She gave him his 1st and 2nd shots for us, the question is, that after each shot in a day or so, he develops a lump in the area of the shot, the first shot it lasted for 2 weeks. then went a way. she said it is like a time shot ; dissolves slowing . is this OK. he seems to be fine so far.

Your chi may be more sensitive to shots than other dogs.  Also, many vaccines are given under the skin, so there may be a lump until all the fluid is absorbed.  Things to watch for as far as vaccinations are if the puppy gets a swollen face, starts panting like it can't breathe, vomits a lot, etc.  That's a bad reaction and a trip to the emergency vet, your dog needs help ASAP.  Both my girls get sick to their stomach and dopey for a day or so after their shots, and my smaller one will occasionally 'spit up' just once a few hours later.  That's ok, as long as they're their old self the next day.

First off, develop a relationship with a veterinarian, preferably one who is knowledgeable in toy breeds.  You should get all your shots and medical care through the vet.  Please consider neutering your dog when he gets to be 5 - 6 months, he will be much happier not getting frustrated by smelling females in heat, especially if they're much bigger than he is.  This also prevents him from 'lifting the leg' and marking things he shouldn't.  I have two females, and believe me they mark things just fine from a squat.  It will Not make him fat or lazy.

Thank you so much Chimama for the answer, one likes to trust the person they got the puppy from. But i wanted a nother oppenion. i have a vet lined up but can't get in tell july. which he will be about the time to be fixed. the breeder was trying to save me money buy giving the shots. which she says she does all the time. i lost a poodle i had after 15 yrs in dec and it took us this long to get another puppy. it hurt so to lose him. the same vet is going to see this one .  i have a schneizer minnie that is 11 yrs old and has adopted to this little sweetheart. they play and get along fine.i am thinking to to take him to the vet and get a phsical any way soon.  and not wait till july.he is very play ful and my hubbie and i have so much love  to give. we are in our late 60s and he is a blessing. again thank you so much for you're advise i will take it serious, joyray

Your vet should definitely see him before July, if for no other reason than a thorough check up.  Also, your puppy should be taking meds against heartworm, which cannot be done until a test is done to make sure he doesn't already have it.  This is done via a tablet given once a month, the usual brand is Heartguard, which you can get through your vet.  There is a vaccination for this now, but it cannot be given to puppies, please do not administer any heartworm related meds until the puppy has had a heartworm test.  I'm also going to assume that the breeder has dewormed the puppy?  Nearly all puppies have worms, it's not the sign of a bad breeder, it's just something puppies get.

If you have concerns about costs, I use the Banfield clinics (www.banfieldhospitals.com or 1-866-277-7387).  They have something called Wellness plans.  It is not insurance, it is a pre-paid plan.  I pay a set fee and all vaccinations, exams, unlimited office calls, etc. are covered at no cost.  The puppy plan will also cover the cost of neutering, hospital stay, lab work, etc.  It ends up that overall the cost is about 1/2 what it would be if you paid for each service individually.  And, if you pay all at once at the start of the plan, you get a discount.  All non-covered things (usually just things like heartworm pills, antibiotics, etc.) are discounted too.  I don't get anything for recommending them, but I'm that impressed that I do recommend them.  They have hospitals (clinics) all over the US, membership in one means you can use any of them, so if you travel, that's just one more advantage, your dogs records are available at any clinic.

You obviously care so much about your little one, my condolences on the loss of your beloved poodle.  I'm sure you and Minnie and the new puppy will have many happy healthy years together.

I just recently sold a great dane pup to a buyer and I gave the pup her first 8 in 1 shot before she left at 6 weeks old, the next day the buyer told me that the pup would play and walk fine but when she would get tired after playing too much, she would put her head down to the floor and acted like she couldn't get up and was using her nose to balance herself back up, and after a few minutes of rest would get back up and be fine until the next time she played again. The buyer also bought another one at the same time and is NOT exhibiting the response as the other. Have you heard of this?
