No, garter snakes DON'T have red stripes on their sides. I know because I saw a garter snake in my woods today.  ;)

Yes, Garter snakes can have a reddish to rust colored strip down each side of their body. There are a few sub-species that are identified in this manner. Some may be result of cross breeding between two sub- species. They are generally restricted to certain areas througout the USA. You can learn more by checking out the National Wildlife website of a similar site for your state.
