Because the definition of a "small amount" is lacking, and the term "mess up" is not defined the question is difficult to answer. If, say, 5% diesel were added there would be almost no noticeable effect other than maybe slightly more visible tailpipe smoke and a darker color on the spark plugs. Power would probably be slightly reduced due to incomplete combustion. These same adverse effects would continue to worsen as the percentage of diesel fuel to gasoline was increased until reaching a point where the spark plugs could no longer ignite the mixture and the engine would no longer run or start. No mechanical damage would result to the engine.  (Gasoline in a diesel engine is an entirely different scenario however, and serious mechanical damage can be done to a diesel engine at certain gas/diesel percentages.)
