Red Dawn was the first motion picture released with the PG-13 rating, which had been created after difficulty rating some movies in 1984, most notably Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) (Flamingo Kid, The (1984) was the first film to be *given* a PG-13 rating, but sat on the shelves for five months before being released).

The PG-13 marker was invented in response to outcry from parents after 1984's "Gremlins" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" received PG ratings. The latter film features a scene in which the villain removes a victim's beating heart, and "Gremlins" put its pint-size villains in blenders. Since then, PG-13 has gained momentum as a populist marker, dominating the list of films grossing over $200 million, among them "Titanic," "Independence Day" and "Jurassic Park."

I came back from the bar tonight and had a girl state to me "i saw on jeopardy tonight a question on 80s movies...what was the first movie to ever receive the pg-13 rating?"  As irony would have it, i hate Red Dawn queued up after putting it in during a drunken "what should i watch?" from the other night.  Needless to say, i won...and i'm going to bed...not alone.  And that's all i've got.

The Indiana Jones box set special features claim that the temple of doom engendered that rating because of its dark themes.

You know I saw Jeopardy today and got this question wrong.  I could have sworn that the first PG-13 movie was Dreamscape with Dennis Quaid.  I am pretty sure I read an article about this, and I don't know why this movie would stick in my mind otherwise.  This may be another case where it was rated but not released for a period of time.

Red dawn is the first PG-13 movie to be released. Temple of doom and Gremlins (rated PG) caused the uproar to make the PG-13 rating. The Flamingo Kid should have been first but the release date was pushed back. Steven Speilberg created the PG-13 rating because he was the one who caused it.

Violent scenes in the 1984 PG-rated films Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which Spielberg directed and Gremlins, which he produced, were the final straws. Public outcry about the violence led Spielberg to suggest a new PG-13 rating to MPAA president Jack Valenti, who conferred with theater owners and then introduced the new rating on July 1. The rating still allowed children under 13 to be admitted without a parent or guardian, but it cautions parents about potentially shocking violence or other offensive content, although not as offensive as an R rating. It is the highest unrestricted rating. The first movie to gain widespread theatrical release with a PG-13 rating was 1984's Red Dawn (although the first to receive the classification was Dreamscape). It took a year for the PG-13 logo to shift into its current form.

Disney's Fantasia?  Just goes to show that just cuz you write it on the internet, Snarf, doesn't make it true.  Fantasia is rated "G".  When the movie was originally released in 1940/1941, there WERE NO MOVIE RATINGS.

FANTASIA! Are you high? Fantasia came out in 1940. PG-13 was introduced in 1984 and the first movie was indeed Red Dawn.
