ok we are nothing stop putting labels on ppl..you guys dont know what your talking about emo means= emotion..every1 is emotional so there for every1 can be emo sometimes ok ...damn...punk...no of you are punk..you dont even kno..simple plan and gc are not Punk the sex pistols are punk none of as are none of us ever will be no matter how much we try to look it we just cant feel it so you guys are wasting your time stop trying to be what your not and live...u only have so long..enjoy your music while its here and stop trying to define it...just go with the flow...damn......and the comment about straight edge..agin wow...lables...just forget about categorizing every1 and move on...posers..come on we all are we all look a t something judge it and do it ...it happens its a way of life just go with it...we are all wasting our life trying to figure every little detail out just for get about it no1 is going to win....... I'm out...

hmm...I think that we shouldn't be concerned with what 'genre' we fall under...I'd have to make up a new one for me anyhow...I don't fit any "one" genre perfectly...but if I had to...I would fall under an emo/punk catagory...I like punk music, and I have a rebellious side to me, but then again...I like emo music, and I have what most people don't which is 'depth of thought' which might or might not be a good thing...I haven't come to that conclusion yet. But I would rather KNOW that life is meaningless, and we all end up in relatively the same place in the end, so it really doesn't matter...than to not know this and live my life pleasing others, falling under conformity, overall losing a sense of who I really am...following the crowd your whole life can get you lost, essentially losing your identity...so I don't, I be myself...wether it be 'emo' 'punk' or a 'rebel' or anything of the sort...music is music, life is life, the two go hand in hand. The trouble starts when you put the wrong music with the wrong style...some of you know them as 'posers' we all hate them...no one says that they are a 'poser' themselves, so really we are waging a war against meaningless subjects...and why the hell am I wasting time on this damn site...

I have no "answers" just opinions."emo is music with emotion" ...im kinda thinking that all music has emotion, regardless of whether or not you like it or agree with it, also emo doesn't mean you "hate life" as some dumb ass put it...its a term for "EMOtional punk"...and yes everyone has their own opinions and ideas so no one shall ever agree, but if you rid your head of everything but the term emotional punk then basically its simple, someone whose emotional, and yes tends to listen to pop-punk, "emo", screamo etc, but not everyone is the same, and yes some people are whiny, fakers, and do "hate" the world, but you can't stereotype everyone like that...and some people get way too far into scenes...I hate emo-core...people are sad, they disappoint me

emo isn't how u dress for those of u who answered it that way.. emo is a type of music where the artists pretty much poor there heart into their lyrics... there r so many diff types of emo too... there emo post-emo emo-core etc... some of those bands arn't exactly considered emo tho but who cares.. its what you like so keep liking it and call it wut ever u want cuz really who cares wut ppl think they r all just a bunch of judging hypocrits if u listened to bury my ashes comment he/she is wrong.. emo is not an emotion its a style of music that stands for emotional.. it doesn't mean that u hate life but what ever you decide emo is don't care wut other ppl say to u! <3

OK, I'd have to go with the fact of emo not being the music you listen to or the way you dress. EMo is a state of mind. You are simply into emotions. EMo people like to feel the world's pain and like to feel all of it on them. This is why they cut themselves to feel real. NOt all emos are cutters though. SOme emo boys wear girl's pants but not all. So the boys don't nessacarily look like girls. There are so many sterio types surrounded by this but basically it is a branch of punk rock originating from bands in the 80's like Rites of spring. They are just bands with an emotional emphasis. So basically if you are going to determine a band as emo it would be incrediblly subject to what other bands you are relating it to. Basically emo is just another sub scene along with indie, underground, etc. etc. In conclusion everyone loves a hot, skinny white emo-boy with uberly tight chick pants and horn rimmed glasses.

Yeah, first off, as others have said; those bands aren't emo. Greenday'snew album is emo. A person who is emo is basically someone who is intrigued by people who have serious issues, and feel the need to mimic their emotions. They claim to be individuals when they all dress the same. How can you claim to have your own style when over half your wardrobe comes from Hot Topic? AS for being "straight edge" as emo kids have affectionately dubbed their trend, it's not emo, just... an intelligent decision. Of course, I'm not going to lecture any drug users because it would be a waste of everyone's time. The emo trend is the worst thing to happen to American society since McCarthyism and parachute pants.

ok... i dont exactly know what sXe is... but i do know that to me emo kids are the kids who sometimes where tight jeans, have that goofy hair (which i think is really hott), have the tight band shirts, and are pretty much the funny kids of the school. i dont know exactly what the 'real' stereotype for "emo" is, but thats what i think it is, and i like it. i think that if you think those bands are emo then they are because things are changing and the meaning of emo isn't the same anymore. just like the style of alternative rock has changed over the years, so do other styles. and emo has been a style since the 80's and now bands that wouldn't have been labeled emo in the 80's are being labeled that now.

ok first off sxe is no drugs no alcohal and no purmiscuis/casual sex it was thought up origonaly by the hardcore band minor threat. it came out of the hardcore scene. emo on the other hand is and emotional version of hardcore punk. the bands are ussualy, rites of spring, embrace, sunny day realastate, coheed and cambria, boys night out, the used, thursday and many others. as for the emo style in my eyes there is none its just music but if u think emo as a label u should idealisticaly have black hair, tight shirts and tight pants and chucks, and u have a very porr out look on life. ure basicaly a scene kid ( witch is not bad im a scene kid my self or acording to shallow ppl)so i other word u can be emo and sxe but just so u kno they have nothing to do with each other. other than they came out of the hardcore style of music.

Hey well im kina new to this site and came along this discussion...well I used tor illy be Anti-Emo and still am..but emo music is good..u dont listen to emo music when u want to kill urself..u listen to it bec u like the music no?..Look jus cuz u listen to Punk does it meean your Punk? no it doesnt..Emo is a kind of emotion that we prefer to call "emo" instead of suicidal..the only reasons those songs are called emo is because of the words int hem..but boo-freaking-hoo who cares..u dont listen to the song for the lyrics u listen to it for the music and it so happens to be good the music then go ahead and lissen to it..its Your Life, Your Choice..Live By Your Own Rules

emo is unreal music, just cause you listen to it, it doesn't make you psycho or depressed about life. It is a refreshing change from rap, pop, country, heavy metal etc. Don't get me wrong I love rap, country, the odd pop etc. But emo is so interesting and different, if you are having a bad day, and you feel like nothing is going your way, emo is a good sound to vent to, I can't help but love it's sound, groups like Hawthorne Heights, senses fail, funeral for a friend, story of the year, sic transit gloria, crossfade, etc. If people feel like dressing up like a "hardcore emo rocker" just giv'r, it's your choice, if thats who you think you are, then go for it! By the way guys, emo stands for 'EMOtional forms of rock or punk'

Lets get things clear kids. I'm not emo, nor have I ever been emo nor will I ever be emo. However, I'm tired of the misconception of the term emo. The term "emo" is not short for "emotional" as it is commonly misconstrued to be. It is actually short for "emotive metal". Emo started in the mid 1980's as a spawn off of hardcore punk and indie rock. Emo spawned into a few subgenres, including hardcore emo, emo violence and screamo. Emo had sporadic popularity throughout the late 80's through the 90's and started popularizing in 2000. Not all music is "emo", as is assumed by some. Yes, most music does display emotion, but Emo music attempts to authentically convey "raw human emotions". This is done in a very imbecilic manner, usually featuring the lead singer falling to their knees and screaming or crying on stage, and from what it sounds like, in the studio. "Emo" became a taunting term that punks used to insult each other. And since then, has become a loosely defined stereotype instead of a specific genre of music, and if there's anything I hate, it's a word becoming undefining... Like gay or fag. I'm not defending people of the emo culture, because I hate them. I'm just educating people who are mislead, of course, 90% of the people who will read this will have to have some argument. So if you're one of those, shut up. I don't need to know of your inutile existence.

I like emo music, like Senses fail, the starting line, death cab for cutie, sugarcult, coheed and cambria, all the way to every time I die. I know that sXe has allot to do with the music you listen to, does this mean I am sXe, or just clean?

But if you fail to recognize which music scene started straight edge, then it'd be pretty dimwitted to consider yourself straight edge. I'd stick with the label "clean" until you brush up on your ethics. Also, it wouldn't hurt to find out what "emo" means either.

1st of all... wot is sXe? educate me... 2nd, who cares whether you are, you should listen to wot you want to listen to, feel comfortable about it without worrying wot other ppl think. ppl criticize all the time and some ppl do it so well they tend to hurt other ppls feelings but that shouldn't change who you are or wot u listen to, just be yourself n don't care wot other ppl think!!!

um sorry to tell you that those bands arent really emo, they are more like indie rock (death cab) and pop-punk (sugercult, the starting line). as for the whole sXe situation ide stay away from that and just go with clean until you get ur definitions straight.

I like bands such as: senses fail, my chemical romance, a static lullaby,avenged sevenfold, dashboard confessional... nd stuff like that. but is that considered emo?.. i personally thought it was more punkish... maybe it is both. can you tell meh which one it is?

im sick of people worrying about labels. please, whatever was wrong with just being yourself? some people who don't much think i'mpunk because i dress kind of weird, and some people think i'memo b/c i listen to it, but i like it best when people label me christine b/c that's who i am and i dont want to fit in any genre.

sXe is a primarily punk movement that does not promote drugs, alchohol, smoking or other life ruining descisions. Emo IS a way of life for many people. It is highly overwritten in the media. Shut Up if you are just going to diss my way of life faggots

Emo is what you think it is, guys. If you listen to Emo music, (Dashboard...etc) then you listen to Emo music. If you write songs, poetry that are Emo, you are Emo. What is Emo? It can be a way of life, a kind of music, or just a word. Emo means "emotional Rock" it is pretty much people screaming about love, hate, depression, break ups, and stuff like that. And sorry, they don't all scream. Emo had a very slow beat, well not extreamly slow, but still slow. It was dark, as in the music is all low chords and stuff. I know Emo. I am a professional Emo Lyric Writer. So no one tell me that I don't know what Emo is.

I don't think people should be so stuck on being cool in listening to an underground band and making fun of mainstream bands. And you shouldn't be glued to trying to label yourself. Just listen to music you YOURSELF think is good, screw what people think, be yourself.

First off - get it right! If you want to be labelled an 'emo kid' you should at least know what emo is!! Those bands you mentioned aren't emo! Emo is stuff like Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, Finch, Funeral For A Friend etc. Does it matter what people think of you as long as you're being honest with yourself?! Listen to what you want, don't listen to bands so that you can fit into some stereotypical label.
