I would highly suggest waiting a few weeks. Maybe 2 or 3 weeks. Just depends how the mother guinea pig acts when you pet them. You can reach in the cage and just pet them when they are 1 week old or so but be sure you have a strong bond with the mother so she don't attack too much and make sure to pet her before you do the babies and reassure her.

I have a guinea pig from a shop and they assured me that she was just a little chubby and sentiently not pregnant as usual it had to happen to me she had 7 babies but unfortunately 2 died by malnourishment the mother rejected the youngsters because they had wandered off while she was licking her other offspring the others stayed with her for over 4 weeks so i would suggest atleast 3-4 weeks just so they can adjust so there surroundings with this info your youngster will be just fine remember at least 3 weeks good luck !

you can handle baby guinea pigs straight away after the birth. the mother will not reject them because they smell different so dont worry about this. as guinea pigs live as a herd in the wild lactating females share the care of the young and as such are not possessive of their offspring.

in fact my gps are quite glad of the rest after giving birth, it takes a lot of energy out of them and of course they have only two nipples so if they have more than two pups removing the excess for a quick cuddle allows a fair circulation of nipple and cuddle time!!

just make sure you keep them warm.

if you handle your baby guinea pigs from birth they become very relaxed friendly pets, and dont ever learn to be be afraid of you which in my experience happens when they are around 4 weeks old.

they should be with their mother for up to 21 days because after 21 days the baby's are ready to mate and will try to have sex with one another.

hi
my brothers guinea pig not long gave birth and we do not know when we can handle them. we have a rather strong bond with the mother and she lets us stroke them alot. When would we be able to pick them up? is it true that they must stay with the mother for atleast 6weeks before they can be separated?
