What chemical(s) will coagulate or emulsify gasoline such that it will take a gelatinous form?

Napalm is made by mixing commercial washing powder(soap) with gasoline...causing the mix to "jell"...but, WHY do this???

if you mix gasoline with lye, yes the stuff soap is made from, you will get a crude form of napalm
