let the cat do what it normally isnt allowed to do, as long as its safe and permittable.  once you do that you will feel a little better. if you decide to put him to sleep on that last day, feed him the things he loves the most, let him climb anywhere(if he can), take a picture of you and the family with him or her.  for the most part, just make him feel loved. after he passes you will feel better. he could last longer than you think.my cat had KIDNEY FAILURE (which is very common in cats) for 4 months and then in effect developed ARTHRTIS. he was very iritable and meowed constantly repeadetly. that is probably a SIGN OF PAIN we eventually put him to sleep and i felt better because he was no longer in pain.. i wish you the best with your cat.  good luck.

Cats seem to get cold and achy when they are dying so what i have been donig is putting a hot water bottle under blanket to keep her warm and comfortable.

My cat is floppy, not eating and doesn't want to be fussed. He is 18. Do you think he is dying.

My cat has CRF also. She has good days and bad. They seem to want to drink alot so have fresh water available and change it 3-4 times a day, a nice furry bed which is washable, lots of love of course and I know they should be on a special diet but i`ve found really nice things to eat, its important they eat as often as possible and i`m sorry to be blunt but our cats are dying so let them have what they want!

I just recently had a cat die of kidney failure, and my best advice is to keep water near, try to keep up their apatite, create a comfy bed for them to rest when they get weak. And love them up, of course, spend all the time you can with them.

To recognize pain, look to see if your cat looks as if he/she is straining. Either in breath, or seemingly through facial expression. I noticed this in my cat, Sabrina, towards the end. Hope that helps. Its really hard to watch a pet go, and I wish you the best.
