In an indexed file in COBOL, a field(s) defined as record key or alternate key is automatically sorted in ascending manner. Non-key fields can be sorted by using the COBOL sort. A sort work area is provided for this equivalent to a sequential file. An advantage of this over indexed field is that sort can be in descending order.

In cobol indexed and relative files already in sorted order , so no need to sord , sort verb applicable only for sequential files
