in the post-WW II world, why did the Soviets want control over certain Eastern European countries?

My guess, although could not be entirely sure, would be that the Soviets wanted certain European Countries to surround Germany, once again. They might have wanted to make sure Germany wouldn't get lose again, so they "blockaded" Germany in to ensure everyone's saftey. Just my guess.
