How much do Chi's eat? My four month old male eats about a cup and a half of puppy kibble a day and he seems to be getting quite a tummy on him! am I over-feeding him?
Thanks.

Maybe.  How big is he right now, as far as his weight?  If he's very active and loves to run around and play, he may be eating what he needs to give him that much energy.  I was amazed at how much my little one ate, once she got to adult size, 2 1/2 pounds, she eats now around 2/3 of a cup a day of adult food.  Also, is he getting treats too?  If so, that could contribute, try to keep treats very small and something nutritious, my vet recommends carrot slices, bits of vegetables, etc.  Dog treats can be broken up into small bits, there's no need to give a 3 pound chihuahua the same size treat you'd give a 20 pound terrier.

Does your vet think he is getting too tubby?  Your chi should be near the end of his vaccination cycles, so the vet has been seeing him at least once a month I would guess.  Remember that chihuahua puppies are little butterballs for a while, it's toddler fat just like human babies.  If you are concerned, ask your vet at your next visit, and please, if you're not going to breed him, have him neutered.  He'll be so much better off not getting excited by every female that walks by, and neutering Does Not make a dog lazy or fat!  Too many treats and not enough exercise make a dog fat.

puppies under a year old, generally, should be fed as much as they will eat, provided they              are not infested with intestinal parasites, and are allowed to get adequate excercise. at least with larger breed, this is true, it may not be so for small breeds and toy breeds. and i       have to disagree with the neuter recommendation. females, sure, spay them after a couple of years of development, at least 2 years, but males? why? especially tiny dogs like chihuahuas! they aren't typically the type of dog that roams the neighborhood, and even if they did, the chance that they would come across a female in heat that was small         enough for them to mate is quite small. so why neuter the poor guy? leave him to be a man.

as we all know Chi's are eating dogs, as in you EAT THEM!!!

like sodomy it's against the laws of nature to not eat them. so feed him full, and invite me over for thanksgiving.

That depends on a lot of things, mainly how old the dog is, how much exercise he gets and what kind of dog food it is.

Older dogs, just like older people, tend to slow down.  When they reach that point, they no longer need the higher protein, higher fat formulas that younger dogs need.  This is why dog food companies now offer low-fat and senior formulas of dog food.

If your dog primarily stays indoors and does not run much or expend much energy, it would need to eat a lot less than, say, a dog that is involved in agility and works every day.

Also, higher quality foods mean you feed less of it to achieve the same results that you would with a lower quality food.  For example, my 95 pound Labrador Retriever eats two cups a day of Wellness dog food.  Wellness is a dog food made with no fillers and human grade ingredients.  A 95 pound Labrador eating Joy dog food would have to eat 8 cups a day, because it is lower quality, mostly filler, and the dog doesn't digest it well.

Also keep in mind that if you feed your dog tidbits (which is not advised) during the day, like little bits of what you are eating, you should also cut back on what you feed him that night.  For example, if your dog has eaten ten french fries, half a tuna sandwich, and three cookies during the course of the day, he definitely does not need his full nightly feeding.  A small token feeding with warm water or chicken bullion added to make the food feel heavier in his stomach would do fine.

You know...i have a chi and she is VERY small. I feed her around 1/4 cup of food 3 times a day! If he is getting fat...start feeding him diet food and ease up on the treats.
Dont worry...your doing a good job just some suggestions!

your vet is best to answer this question based on weight and overall size of your dog. He will need to take into consideration of his age, metobolism and health. I have a 9 pound senior dog who eats 1/4 cup per day and a 3 yr old 5 pounder who eats almost a half cup per day. all based on my vets recomendations. I suggest the conversation on your next bi-annual visit or sooner.

Just feed him enough to keep him lean but not skinny. He shouldnt be fat either. You will be able to judge him yourself after a while. I would say you are over feeding him.
