how do you train a chesapeake bay retreiver?

my cousin has a 3 yr old retriever. the dog has 4 pages of back ground and seems to have really good temperment.  i'mthinking i may give it a try and get him ready for the second part of duck season. is this a good idea? what book or video may be useful to me in training him if so? thanks adam
