1) to link the name to Pep, energy or vigor

2) as an onomotopeoic reference to the sound it makes when the can is opened and it fizzes ... Pop-sss.

Combine the two and you get "Pepsi"

Like Coca Cola it was originally sold as a syrup for medicinal purposes as a remedy for stomach/abdominal ailments such as dyspepsia.  Thus the name Pepsi from the word dyspepsia.

He first named in "Brad's Drink" which was named after his last name. But then after brad's drink was brought by the Loft Candy Company, a competetor from Newark, NJ gave him the name "Pep Cola" which Caleb Bradham bought for $100 from that man. But then He decided to name the  drink Pepsi Cola which was named after the pepsin and cola nuts used in the recipe. thats the real reason why according to my reasearch :D

Soon the name was changed to Pepsi-Cola. Some theories as to why I named it Pepsi-Cola include: 1. I bought the name Pep Kola from a local competitor and changed it to Pepsi-Cola. 2. Pepsi-Cola is an anagram for Epi-sco-pal. A Church across the street from my drugstore. Another theory is that Pepsi was initially intended to cure stomach pains so the name Pepsi may have derived from the condition dyspepsia (stomach aches and indigestion).
