I came to the U.S. in 1985 with a B1 visa and changed it to a F1. I am now out of status; however, my husband is going for his citizenship oath in 3 weeks. Please tell me if he should tell the immigration officer that he wants to apply for a green card for me at the oath ceremony or should we wait until after he is sworn in and receives his citizenship?  Also, if we are fully capable of filling out the forms, do you think it is still necessary to hire a lawyer for this process?
