My black lab has a spotted tongue as well and would like to know what this means too. I know his dad is a yellow and his mom is a chocolate. So I don't believe he is a mix of any kind.

The spots on a dog tongue is normal. It has nothing to do with them being a "mutt".

... however, keep in mind that any dark, RAISED patches on your dog's tongue, patches that weren't there or that you never noticed until recently, please have your vet check them out immediately.  There are three serious types of cancer that exhibit themselves in black/grey/purple tumorous patches.

Blklab, thank you for that article.  Our Dutch Shepherd is a rescue dog, so we*re not exactly sure what he*s mixed with, although he*s dominant Dutchie.  But his spotted tongue always made us wonder what breeds carry this gene...now I know...they all do!  Thank you so much for bringing closer to the question, "Is he mixed with chow?  Cuz he looks nothing like it!
