My 8 year old Miniature Schnauzer has suffered for years with skin allergies. She has had skin testing and is allergic to many plants, weeds, trees, dust, molds etc etc. She has went through allergy shot which I gave her myself for over 1 1/2 years. We have tried all kinds of antihistamines with no change. I do not let her stay outside for long lengths of time which is so sad since she loves it so. I am going to purchase special air filters for our home which I hope will help but the biggest problem now is I can't find a shampoo to use on her that doesn't make her skin turn as red as a raw piece of meat. She smells awful within a week of bathing so I really need to find something. Anything medicated really irritates her skin. I have tried all of the shampoos the vets have to offer and wasted $1000's of dollars on there ideas. I am reaching out to all of you for advice.
Please help! I love her so and want to make her life as special and enjoyable as possible.
Thank you for any help that anyone can offer.

Have you tried Johnson's Baby Shampoo? I sent my husband to the pet store to get a dog shampoo that was mild enough to not irritate our Shar-Pei/Lab mix, Newton's skin. Yet one that would still kill any fleas. The gal at the store recommended Johnson Baby Shampoo. It's nice and mild on their skin, doesn't burn if any gets in their eyes and if you lather up your pup and leave on about 5 minutes, then rinse, it kills the fleas by suffocation.
Another plus is my Newt smells so good for over a week, and it really does kill the fleas! Try it, You'll only spend about $3.00 and if you don't find it's right for your Schnauzer, you can always use it. Try the purple bottle,it's lavender.
Good Luck!

Wow... I'm sorry about your dog's rash.  My dog has a horrible rash too.  Let's see... what did we use... oh man... I think it was... oh yes!  Premium!  Ask your dog's vet about premium dog shampoo.  It's an extra thick formula that actually gives your dog relief from fleas or skin irritation's.  Worked like a charm on my dog.  I hope it does wonders for your dog.  And it comes in scents! Lol! Seriously, ask your vet about Premium (pree-me-um).  It's really good.

Have you tried baby shampoo?  We use on our mini schnauzers and it works great.  It is mild enough for our son and the dogs.  And it doesn't burn if it gets in their eyes.

Hi There,
After reading about your problem, I could not help but tell you about my Schnauzer too...he has had an allergie to something, what, we really don't know.  His symptoms are small clusters of bumps, only around his neck and the top of his head, he rubs his face and bites and scratches on his feet...our Vet gave him a steriod shot, followed up by an additional 10 pills over the next two weeks....I have noticed a difference in him already....you may want to mention this to your Vet, if you have not already tried this procedure.

In the event that you would like to contact me at my personal email addres it is as below:
vanmac50@yahoo.com

Good luck, and I hope you can find some relief for your dog AND for yourself...I know it can be quite frustrating at times.

Sincerely,
Van McIntosh

Have you tried Earthbath?
One of my friends old dog had sensitive skin, allergies, ect. but when we used earthbath on him he wasn't irritated by it at all. I just googled it and in it's description it says: Some of our beloved furry friends have skin allergies and sensitivities that can make it difficult to get clean and simultaneously remain happy. (Puppies and kittens often fall into this category). Earthbath solved this dilemma by blending the finest natural ingredients into this mild, hypo-allergenic, tearless shampoo. It cleanses thoroughly and safely, and even the most sensitive skin will not be affected because Earthbath uses only mild, safe, non-irritants. It will leave your pet's coat soft, plush, and smelling naturally fresh. Safe for dogs and cats over 6 weeks of age.
100% Biodegradable, 16 fl. oz. Animal Cruelty Free

Hope this helps you and your dog!

try baby oil after a bath and don't bath for a week. We also moved our mini out to the garage to his kennel with just a blanket in the bottom. Don' know he was alergic to the carpets or what it was but the baby oil has worked and its much less expensive than shots or watching them scratch themselves raw.

Patricia,

Try completly changing her food to natural stuff like raw carrot pieces, raw meat, raw suede/turnip, cooked brown rice, cabbage, chicken, cooked potato, parsnip etc.

AVOID CORN as many dogs are allergic to it, but for some reason its in a lot of dog foods. Supplement her diet with omega 3 fish oils, you can get them in capsules in the supermarket or chemist/pharmacy. 1 capsule a few times a week.

1 meal might consist of chopped raw carrot, chopped raw beef and some cooked brown rice.
Alternate the meals. Really try to get her to eat it even if she refuses it at first, she will eat it eventually, a dog will never starve itself.

Seriously, take her off commercial dog food altogether. A lot of it is basically just sh*t. It causes serious problems and allergies for a lot of dogs.

In a lot of cases its the food that causes the problem.

I really hope this helps your Miniature Schnauzer.
