Have a vet show you and buy some rubber gloves and ky jelly.  We do our dogs every few months when they need it done and a vet or vet tech are the best places for you to learn how to do it.  Most vets understand wanting to save a little money by doing routine procedures at home.  If your's doesn't, find a new vet.
