Did your friend switch brands?  Dogs sometimes don't readily accept new food.

I don't recommend mixing the new food with wet food for two reasons:

1.  It would be the same as allowing a child to mix his meat and potatoes with pudding in order to get him to eat his meat and potatoes.

2.  Wet food has more preservative and additives (including sugar) and is not considered the best choice of food for a dog.  It also promotes tartar build-up on teeth.

I suggest your friend try these two alternate solutions:

1.  Serve the old brand again and gradually add the new brand, increasing the amount of the new brand with each meal until the meal consists solely of the new brand.

2.  Try adding Vita-Gravy to the new brand.  At least the gravy has some nutrients, although it's probably not necessary if the dog is eating quality dry food.

If nothing works, I agree with Kitty:  take the dog to the vet if the dog starts to lose weight because there might be a legitimate problem.

When a dog is healthy but won't eat then it isn't hungry. When my dogs refuse to eat I take the food away until the next meal. I repeat this process until they eat the food as soon as I put it in their bowl. Sometimes it takes even as many as 4-5 meals but when they are hungry they will eat. Make sure there is no food available to them except at meal times and they will learn to eat the food when you give it to them. Good luck!

It depends on the dogs age if its a puppy he might not be used to the food because a) he hasn't eaten it before b) he's bored of the same thing all the time c) the food lacks certain nutrients that he's not getting in the food.

If its a fully grown dog maybe he needs to go up a level of dog food e.e. from puppy food to adult or adult to senior or in reverse depending on its age.

Also Jack Russells' tend to be fussy eaters so you never really know when you've found the right food unless your dog likes it!!!

But all in all if her dog is hungry enough he'll eat his food. A way to try to get him to eat his food is also to hand feed the dog although he could get into a habit of being hand fed all the time or to add a dog treat under his biscuits so that he has to eat his food and then be rewarded for it!!!

but if all else fails the Vet is only a phone call and trip away!!!

pups can be fussy kids in eating. I would suggest not to pay too much of attention to his not eating his own food.. he will eat when the  hunger grows. The thumb rule is watch for 5 days, if the problem still continues, go to a vet. Also, if he doesnt eat the food, remove it after 20 mts. good luck!

I have a 5 yr old husky/German shepherd that has not eaten in 2 day. she was drinking her water but today has not touched anything, food or water. I tried to get her to lick some milk and sugar off my fingers but she seems scared when i try to give her something and walks away. she seems distant and depressed, she seems to want to play when i throw a ball or try to play with her but, she`ll just stop and lay down looking sad. I`m probably going to take her to the vet tomorrow but for right now I`m at my wits end, and don`t know what to do. Any clues to whats wrong? please.

Well i have a similar problem with my staff he has always been a good eater, two big meals a day, he is around 2 years but now the hot weather is here and the females are in season he nibbles a bit here and there. Has he come into contact with a female in season as this could affect him as boys are boys, that if he is not castrated of-course. This is worrying i must admit when they go off there food but if it goes on too long do take him to the vet as it could well be a underlying problem.
All my best wishes

Dog not eating:
1.  If there is concern that your pup/dog ate something inappropriate such as a piece of a toy, clothing or ESPECIALLY a corncob, take them to the vet to have them palpated or/and x-rayed for obstructions in the gut.  Blockage can cause the animal to stop eating and can be painful and potentially lethal.
2.  If it is not a medical concern, review your habits:
Do you feed table scraps?  If so, the dog may begin to get picky if it knows that it can hold out for tasty table scraps.  If you feed them raw food (veggies, meat, rice, etc.) make sure to do it in their dish and at regular feeding times to reduce begging and pickiness.

Did you change your dog food flavor/brand/type?  Dogs do not always take to new food.  Previous suggestions of mixing small amounts of the new food over a period of time while slowly increasing the amount of new food will help your dog adjust are excellent.

Did something change in your dog's life?  Did you leave for vacation, did the dog go on a trip with you, did he/she go to the vet for an extended period of time, did you take it camping? Life events that seem fun and/or simple can sometimes disrupt their feeding behavior.

Vets have recommended adding cottage cheese or boiled-ground burger with white rice to their food to encourage eating or to ease an upset stomach. Is your dog chewing/eating a lot of grass?

Have you checked them for parasites?

What kind of food are you feeding.  Most "discount" or "grocery store" brands - even Purina - don't always contain the most desirable ingredients.  A low/no wheat food with appropriate amounts of fat and protein are recommended.  Puppy food is ideal for very active dogs with high fat and protein demands.  Large breed puppy and dog food can be good for extra-large dogs to inhibit rapid growth however, have very low fat and protein content and don't taste as good as small/medium breed dog food.

In conclusion, it is always a good idea to consult a vet which concerns such as these or before making major changes in your dog's diet.  Even if it doesn't seem like a big deal.

my puppy is 4 months old and he wont eat his own dog food.  The only thing he eats is human food and I try to feed him is own food but he wont eat it.  Also the only thing he would eat is meat.  I try so many ways to make him eat his own food by mixing meat and dry food together but he seems to only eat the meat.  Is there any way to change this habit?

i have 2 jack russells pups that are 8 wks old, about a week ago one of them contracted the parvo virus, we feed her pedialyte and baby food for 4 days, thank god her is ok, the second one also (we think) contracted the virus because she became ill for a couple days, we nursed her through it as well. but no we have a problem. the will no longer eat their dog food. we have tried dry and canned in several different brands. they will only eat baby food, cat food and people food. does anyone have and suggestions to help get them to eat their own food,. is there something the catfood and babyfood that they might be craving that the dog food doesnt have?

My Shih Tzu got bitten by another dog 3 weeks ago.  The vet fix him up and his wombs looks better.  Anyways, he seem to be sad once in a while and he seems to not eat alot.  In the past, he ALWAYS like to eat human food.  But now, he seems to ignore that also.  Eventually, he will eat in the evening just not a lot.  What should I do?
