I have a mix dog that kinda adopted our family instead of us adopting it! Its a large dog that appears to be a golden retriever/collie type mix. Looking at a golden retriever puppy picture the dog is identical to one. But it has VERY thick sable and white color hair and a thick tail that at times curls over his back. My question is that Biggin grunts. Not occasionally but ALL the time. He barks, in 5 months only heard him growl once and quietly...but like a cat purring he grunts especially when getting attention and love. What causes this and is it normal?

My purebred Golden Retriever does this too.  My vet said its just an expression of contentment.
