Cocker spaniels are dogs whose tails are clipped for three main reasons;

1.- To comply with the breed standard.

2- If they are working dogs (used as hunting dogs), to prevent their tails to get hurt.

3.- Cocker spaniels don't wage their tails in a lateral motion but in a circular one. As they're dogs with a long spine, if their tails were too long, it would suffer from stress from the circular movements. This way, you relieve the dog from spinal stress by keeping their tails short.

Tail docking is totally inhumane. Please don't do it. NO DOG BREED NEEDS IT! Just ask any Vet or animal association.

No, spaniels tails do not need to be docked. In a hunting environment, a full tail will be damaged by the dense brush required to run through. Visit the Council of Docked Breeds for more information.

if u haven'theard yet FINALLY it is ILLEGAL to dock tails not only for cocker spaniels but for all dogs. May i also say that if god thought that by giving cocker spaniels long tails it would suffer from spinal stress then god would indeed give them short tails but as this informaiton is a load of bull they have beautiful long tails in which is one way they are able to communicate emotions towards their owners.  eg.. when one is happy they simply wag their tail in excitement. i have so far had the pleasure of owning 3 cocker spaniels with tails and not one i have found to have 'spinal stress' Tails are apart of a dog just like smiling lips are apart of we humans.

it is a good idea to cut off a cocker spainals tail cause there tails cause they wag in a circle not back and forth so when it gets really happy and the tail is not  cut off it might knock you down

My cocker spaniel loves to run around the yard, but he'd always bang his tail on patio furniture, it was getting really hurt, so we got his tail short.

well, i don't really know, but i have been reading about it and i don't think that you would have to cut your dog's tail, because dogs use their tails as part of their body language when communicating with each other.  Dogs with docked tails unintentionally send out mixed signals to other dogs resulting in aggressive attacks.
On the other hand, if your dog is going to be a hunter you should cut it because that would help him to not hurt it. (I'mfrom Argentina!and my dog in a cocker, and he has his tail cut!!)
