if u get something pierced at a good, clean place, and u take care of the piercing like ur supposed to, then theres very little chance that it will get infected... the only other factor is if ur body doesnt like the jewelry u use... if u pierce ur self, ur pretty much asking for an infection...

I need help... I am 14 and I really really want my belly button peirced. Thats like the main thing I want for like x-mas or my b-day. My mom said no... so i peirced it myself. I know, I know bad idea but I wanted it done so bad. Well at the time, my moms friend was dying of lung cancer. I told her about my piercing and she was cool about it and didn't tell my mom. Like a week before she died I went to the Hospital to see her. She sent my mom out of the room and told me to show her my navel. I lifted up my shirt and there was no barbel in it. I took it out because I decided I could wait a few more years. The last thing she ever said to me was "Im proud of you." A few months later... DUMMY ME, pierced it again. LOL. But when the needle was almost through her words ran through my head. I took out the needle, and now my belly button is healing. So, should I wait till Im 18? Or keep begging my mom?

I think that milkchokolate-shawty is completely right. If you follow the care instructions go to a good reputable place then you should have no problem. Although all piercings get infected some way or another but if you do right then it won't be a serious infection.

Infections are fairlu uncommon, and usually only happen to peaple who have their piercings done unproffesionally or unhygienically, or those who dont look after tehir piercing while it heals. What is more common is an irritation, which can be caused by your body rejecting the piercing or jewellry, incorrectly fitted jewellery, or the piercing being knocked about a lot (for example bumping it, catching on clothing etc). an irritation is not really a major problem and can be avoided. It is fairly easy to tell the difference between and infection and an irritation. If it is irritated, it may be red or weeping (but not pusy). it may also be itchy but it shouldnt be too painful (unless you bump or knock it). An infection is when the whole area is red, swollen, oozing green or yellow pus, and may feel hot to touch. If you think your piercing may be indfected, go back to your piercer for advice asap.
