The Vietnam War originally began when President H. Truman authorized economic and military aid to the south in May of 1950. Our nation did not enter into the conflict all at once; it was done in increments. Furthermore, the U.S. offered help to the south by training the Civilian Irregular Defense forces, to halt the advance of the Vietminh Guerillas, who were later called the Viet Cong (V.C.). The Vietminh defeated the French and forced them to accede the creation of two separate governments in the government divided at the 17th Parallel. The U.S. refused to accept the arrangement and partook in a nation building effort of his own. This was extremely difficult since the leaders in the south were extremely corrupt and focused solely on their own issues and political desires. By 1961, President Kennedy secretly sent 400 Special Forces soldiers to the area to "Win the hearts and minds" of the people. This action only served to antagonize the situation even further. The Special Forces only served to become a seed for the troops yet to arrive in country after Kennedy's death in 1963.
So, as you can see, there is no easy answer to your question since war was never officially declared, and U.S. involvement was increased until the late 1960s when Nixon realized that we could not win a decisive war in Vietnam without a full-scale war which the American people were not willing to support.
As for your question regarding the Australian’s entering the war. They only sent in a small (relatively speaking) garrison of soldiers to secure their interests in the region.

the war was a nasty war it was one of the worst war the had ever happened.  the where a lot of killing in the war about 58 thousand people where killed.  There where a lot of people missing too, and a lot of people that other people where missing and loving and caring for.  This war was devastating.  It was a close one to choose if the north or south had one.  Well the south had one by a little and the north had lost.  This is my story on the vietnam war.

Well thank you to all the people who gave such amazing answers to the vietnam war questions. We all appreciate it very much. By we I mean, me, Billbob, and about 25 llamas whp wanted to learn morew about the war. All they needed was some information and this site came up...thats when the trouble broke out!!! they went crazy and we had to shoot them all with tranqulizers!! only 4 of them fell asleep and i was kiled by a stampede. I am grateful to all of you.

what is up with all the sex comments?!?!?
the vietnam war was from 1945 to 1975.
president truman made the truman doctrine, which stated that the US would support any country against communism.
i'msorry but i have no info about the australians in the vietnam war.
