I've been off of running for four months because I got shin splints while I was running cross country. My guess would be that I got them from increasing my pace and running on cement and different hard surfaces that I was not used to. My shin splints got so bad that it became physically impossible for me to run because the pain was so extreme. I have been to dozens of people to see what to do so that I can run again and everything that I have been told has been contradicted by the next person. Most of the advice I have gotten has been that I should continue to run through the pain and ice them before and after, but that only makes them worse and I am afraid of getting a stress fracture. I am dieing to run again and I ask anyone who might know what to do to please let me know.

I too have shin splints.  Mine were so severe that the muscle was pulling away from the bone.  I found that the best thing to relieve the pain was to get lifts for the insides of my shoes, to raise the arch of your foot.  Give your shins a bit of a break to heal.  You will know when the arch is in the right position as you will feel relief.  Then you will be able to run again.  Good Luck!
