Dear Alice,
Is it true that your metabolism speeds up when you're high off pot? I heard that when you have the munchies after smoking marijuana, it doesn't matter what you eat because your metabolism is so fast. Please give me an answer!!

-Munchie Metabolism

Dear Munchie Metabolism,
Scientific research has yet to document whether or not smoking marijuana (cannabis) has a direct effect on metabolism; however, it appears that the body processes food similarly when high on pot as when sober.

Studies have shown, though, that cannabis does trigger an increase in appetite, hence "having the munchies." "The munchies" is usually a desire for sweet and fatty treats, foods that, when not consumed in moderation within a balanced, varied eating and exercise plan, promote weight gain. Studies also show that individuals who regularly smoke pot gain weight over time. The increase in appetite leads to extra caloric intake, contributing to weight gain. In fact, even though the use of marijuana as medicine remains a controversial issue, the appetite-stimulating effects of marijuana have been documented. HIV/AIDS patients who need to gain weight, for example, eat more when they smoke cannabis.

Based on what is known, marijuana does not influence metabolism. In other words, what you eat matters just as it would if you were not high on pot.

NO.  Metabolism derives from your muscle and your muscle mass.  The more muscle you have or use, the higher your metabolism can increase.  Marijuana is a muscle relaxant so in actuality it could decrease your metabolism.  In a nut shell if you aren't careful what you eat while your stoned, You can easily gain weight. Oh and the "munchies" is because it stimulates different neurons in the brain and make you THINK you are hungry.  If it was metabolism increasing....You WOULD be hungry.

there really hasnt been a study to prove that it does or doesnt increase metabolism but think about it.. if it dod increase it. wouldnt there be no "fat" stoners. They would be able to burn off the food that they ate with their "new" increased metabolism. So whos to say it does or it doesnt but if u ask me im gonna have to say that marijuana is effecting some part of the brain that contorlls ur food intake and just makes u hungry. not increasing metabolism.

no..it slows it down.it sends a signal to you brain telling it that it needs more glucose even if you don't need to be eating. thats why everything tastes exceptionally good and you munch out. you can eat a lot yes but its worse because your metabolism slows down and then you eat more.you will eventually get really chubby.it also makes it hard to work out so you get inactive.all you want to do is smoke and eat a delicious meal instead of walking a lot outside and excercizing. before you know it, you are HUGE.Its still fun to smoke though.

No.  Of course weed doesn't increase your metabolism.  It makes you crave crappy food and unfortunetely your body processes it at the same speed it would if you weren't high.

I think that people just say that because you get the munchies when your high.  I think when people want food they think they are hungry. And they think they are hungry because their metabolism is faster.

marijuana has not been found to increase metabolism.  In general, marijuana increases one's desire for sweet, salty and fatty foods.  People who use marijuana often gain weight because of these cravings of fatty foods.

Yes it increases your metabolism greatly! It can cause chest pain in people who smoke it for long periods of time as well. The effect of increased heart rate causes your metabolism to increase. Thats why you eat so much because your circulatory system moves faster causing your body to require more energy, so you want (crave) food (which is known as the munchies by users). Based on personal experiences with marijuana, I would not suggest smoking weed. Learn to say no, or you will find yourself smoking it more often which leads to dependency on the drug. Which is not fun trust me! No matter what research supports use of this drug, marijuana only gave me bad effects, the high may be fun but the health effects from long term and occasional use are shown by scientists to be just as bad as smoking tobacco. They both cause cancer, I'm 16 years old and have also found in myself that I have decreased memory functionality as well as increased anxiety and loss of weight. I find that I get more head aches now then i used to. Which most likely is caused from weed. So I have decided to stop using it. Even though I only use it occasionally, I still have noticed quite severe effects on my thought process and on my short term memory (also slight long term memory problems). My math skills are not as strong as when I was younger either. So to all teens out there, learn to say no to drugs and alcohol! They are so not worth it. If I can say no, anyone can!

Ok.  Why does everyone believe it increases your metabolism?  Getting the munchies does not mean your metabolism is going faster.  It means you're hungry because that's what pot does.  End of story.

Marijuana does NOT increase your metabolism.

Actually, that's a myth, weed only increases your appetite, not your metabolism. in fact, most of the time when you're stoned you crave fatty foods because weed doesn't affect your metabolism, just your appetite. studies show that chronic weed smokers gain weight when giving into the munchies, so if you satisfy the munchies and don't work off the extra calories, you will gain weight.
