when you call the shots, you have some authority, head cheese, hence "shot caller". this is often used by rappers.

A shot caller is a leader, a person with utmost respect. This is a person who when he wants something, he'll have it done no questions asked. They drive the best cars, with chrome rims, with lots of pocket cash, and like the previous guy said, "they call the shots!"

shot callers are the gang leaders in prison who have to give the orders for a fight/whatever to happen. If you get start a fight without the shot callers permission... you're dead. Thats where the rappers got it from.

Shot caller is a basketball reference...that you are able to tell your opponent what you are going to do (call your shot) and still score against him. Implies supreme confidence and ability. You are a bad motherf*cker...a shot caller.
