A computer virus is a software program designed primarily to replicate itself and spread to another computer.

At the most basic level this is all a computer virus does.  People have built on this principal to enable a virus to cause damage.  Common functions in viri now are:

* Replicate and spread to other computers
* Prevent Anti-Virus programs from updating
* Prevent Anti-Virus programs from functioning correctly
* Collect data from a computer to send to a recipient
* Collect e-mail addresses from a computer to send virus to
* Send copies of virus by an internal SMTP (e-mail) server.
* Prevent access to security/anti-virus websites
